FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The Psychology
Department is currently committed to providing
at least 4 years of financial assistance
to all students in the program. (There is no separate
application for financial aid.) Beginning graduate
students receive graduate assistantships for which
they are required to provide approximately 20 hours
per week of teaching or research assistance to
a faculty member during the academic year. In recent
years, the stipend for a graduate assistantship
was
$9,134 plus a waiver of tuition. (Estimated living
expenses for full-time graduate students for two
semesters are $7,000.)
Advanced graduate students have other opportunities
for financial support. Clinical students, in their
3rd year and above, can request a clinical
placement as a source of both training and financial support.
Clinical placements are coordinated by the faculty,
and placement duration, duties, and salary vary.
In addition to these outside opportunities for financial
support, advanced clinical students can also continue
to work within the department by leading discussion
and lab sections of undergraduate courses or by assuming
full responsibility for a course in the undergraduate
curriculum.
During the summer, graduate students
are awarded an assistantship with a stipend of
$800 and waiver
of tuition for each of the two summer semesters
in which the student is registered for at least
six credit hours.
In addition to the stipend and
tuition waiver, Miami University offers health
insurance to graduate students.
The cost of the insurance can be deducted from the
monthly stipend check. Although university fees are
partially waived, students are required to pay
a small portion
of their university fees. These can also be paid
using payroll deduction.
Other opportunities for financial support come from:
Research Grants
Both students and faculty can apply for internal and external research
grants. The
Office For the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (OARS) provides information and assistance with this process.
Funding for Travel and Research
The psychology department and the university offer various sources of money
for student and faculty travel to professional conferences to present their
research. In addition, some financial support is available for research project
expenses. Students may also apply for money to be used for final reproductions
of theses and dissertations.
Loans
Some students choose to supplement their stipend with loans to help cover expenses.
The Office of Student Financial
Assistance provides information and assistance
with the process of applying for and maintaining student loans.
