Theoretical
Orientation:
|
My perspective is guided by a developmental psychopathology framework, which integrates the various unidimensional theories of psychopathology—psychodynamic, family systems, interpersonal, attachment, cognitive-behavioral—in order to understand the child as a whole person as she or he develops over time.

Research
Interests:
|
Broadly speaking, my research focuses on the family processes that contribute to the development of—or protection against—psychopathology. I have long-standing interests in understanding and ameliorating the effects of interparental conflict, family violence, maltreatment, divorce, and parent-child discord. I am interested in the ways in which risk factors affect relationships among families members, such as in the study of parent-child boundary dissolution, as well as implications of these family processes for youths’ internalization of relationships, such as in the study of working models of attachment and their association with intimate partner abuse. Studies going on in my lab at present include investigating the social, cognitive, and emotional factors underlying the roles that youths play in bullying; understanding the relationship between trauma and juvenile delinquency; investigating risk and protective processes for maltreated children; and studying the intersections among family dynamics, personality, and dating relationships in adolescence and emerging adulthood. I also have an abiding interest in the study of resilience--uncovering the protective factors that allow children to overcome the risks associated with family stress and trauma will help us to design empirically supported intervention and prevention programs that are developmentally sensitive and effective in real-world settings. |
Opportunities
for Graduate Students:
|
I maintain an active lab group and involve students in all phases and aspects of my research. |
