Campus Crime Alert results in charges in Oxford, Ohio

On Saturday, September 8, 2007, at approximately 3:50 a.m., Lawrence Hilton of Fayetteville, Georgia, a 23-yr old Miami University graduate student, came to the Oxford Police Department to report that he had been assaulted by two males unknown to him. Investigating officers learned that Hilton had allegedly returned to his S. Poplar Street apartment at approximately 3:00 a.m. where he was confronted by two white male subjects who forced their way into his residence. Both subjects reportedly struck Hilton, while one subject uttered racial and sexual slurs towards him. The affray then was taken outdoors where Hilton chased one of the subjects with a kitchen knife.

Hilton was treated and released at McCullough-Hyde Hospital for minor injuries. Because of the serious nature of the reported crime (home invasion and hate-bias overtones), Oxford Police dedicated considerable resources to the investigation, including the release of preliminary information to the Miami University Police Department that resulted in the issuance of a Campus Crime Alert.

As a result of the investigation and information brought forward by individuals responding to the Crime Alert, OPD investigators this afternoon charged Hilton with Inducing Panic (F-5), Falsification (M-1) and Unlawful Restraint (M-3).

Oxford Police and its partners in Operation Safe School Start – Miami University Police Department, Oxford Township Police Department, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office --- continue in their efforts to provide a safe environment for Miami University students and Oxford residents. Oxford Police gratefully express their appreciation to those that responded to the Campus Crime Alert.
