The Department of Human Resources provides workshops for faculty and staff members. The following programs are provided through the office of Staff Development. You can register for these sessions through the TRAIN system.

Before You Shred
This workshop is designed for employees whose job responsibilities include records management. Before You Shred will focus on records retention and disposal in compliance with the Ohio Revised Code and Miami University Records Retention Policy.

Communication Solutions will cover the dynamics of your individual communication style and how it affects others. Effective communication is essential when working with individuals or groups. This workshop is intended to give participants tips and a communication model to assist with healthy communication behaviors.

Email Etiquette
Email Etiquette will cover what is appropriate content and layout for business emails, how to make your emails say more with less, and why it is important to include and omit certain items from business emails.

Dealing with Change
This workshop is a business simulation intended to help employees learn how to assume personal responsibility for their own response to, and participation in, the events that surround organizational change.

Grammar from the Ground Up
Grammar from the Ground Up will cover fundamental parts of speech and basic punctuation, simple sentence structure coupled with proofreading and editing, and how to identify and correct commonly confused words.

Proactive Conflict Management
Participants will learn about conflict and concepts for conflict resolution including:the different positions involved in a conflict; the four types of distress responses and how the brain reacts to being overwhelmed by emotional distress; the structure and process needed for successful conflict resolution; and strategies for managing resistance.

Recognizing Individual Differences
Recognizing Individual Differences is designed to give you a better understanding of why people exhibit different behaviors in the workplace. This course explores working style preferences, organizational structures, and responses to individuals when preferences differ. Throughout this course, you will learn ways to help you effectively work through differences that may occur in the workplace.

Team Building: Jungle Escape - NEW
Team Building: Jungle Escape will allow participants to be part of a team that must use strategic thinking to escape the jungle. While taking part in this adventure, participants will discover how teams function; Fragmented, Divergent, or Cohesive. In addition, teams will learn the skills vital to effective teamwork, including: communication, decision making, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Participants will experience first-hand the impact of planning as it relates to group results, and understand the effect of individual behavior on group productivity.

The Right Start to Writing
This workshop will cover the basic parts of writing which will include: the writing process, paragraph structure, passice and active voice, and the components of a letter and a memo. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants should acquire the fundamental knowledge of how to write a letter and a memo in a correct format.

Workplace Violence
This workshop will address workplace violence and prevention, personal safety and crime tips, some frequently asked questions, and provide an introduction to the Miami University Police Department. 

Representatives from the Miami University Police Department will facilitate the session.
