Papers written in class or out of school, including college application essays, are acceptable. Papers may be revised after being returned by your teacher.
Miami University's Department of English follows the National Council of Teachers of English “Guidelines for Gender-Fair Use of Language” (formerly “Guidelines for Nonsexist Use of Language”) and any sources used must be properly documented. For explanations of both nonsexist language and proper documentation, see the explanation on the NCTE website. (An explanation is also available in the downloadable Best of Miami Portfolios).
For any one piece of writing (not all four pieces), include and label all draft material and paperclip it to the end of the appropriate essay. Portfolios lacking draft material will not be scored. (Note cards will not be accepted.)
Your name should not appear anywhere in your portfolio—including your reflective letter. All of your writing—except draft material—must be free of teachers’ marks, grades, and comments. Do not staple or bind your portfolio. Paper clips are acceptable. In addition to the hard copy of the portfolio, please also include a clearly labeled CD-ROM containing digital copies of your three submissions and reflective letter in MS Word format.
Submit anytime between May 1 and June 16, 2008. Do not send payment. You will receive results by mail within three weeks. Results will not be given by phone.
The portfolio submission fee is $30, more if you earn Miami University credit, and you will receive a $10 gift certificate from an Oxford area bookstore. The submission fee will be billed to your bursar account. Do not send payment with your portfolio.
