The Philosophy Minor

The Department offers a minor in Applied Ethics and a minor in the History of Philosophy. To sign up for a minor, you should obtain a "Divisional Transfer and/or Change of Major, Minor, Thematic Sequence" form from the Arts and Science Advising Office (146 Upham Hall) or from our main office (212 Hall Auditorium ), obtain the signature of our chief departmental undergraduate adviser , and return the completed form to the Arts and Science Advising Office.

  • PHL 311 - Ethical Theory

and any three (3) of the following:

  • PHL 312 - Contemporary Moral Problems
  • PHL 331 - Political Philosophy
  • PHL 335 - Philosophy of Law
  • PHL 355 - Feminist Theory
  • PHL 360.A - Confronting Death
  • PHL 375 - Moral Issues in Health Care
  • PHL 376 - Environmental Philosophy
  • PHL 475 - Justice in Health Care

 

MINOR IN THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY

One (1) of the following:

  • PHL 103 - Society and the Individual (3)
  • PHL 104 - Purpose or Chance in the Universe (3)
  • PHL 105 - Theories of Human Nature (3)

both of the following:

  • PHL 301 - Ancient Philosophy
  • PHL 302 - Modern Philosophy

and any two (2) of the following:

  • PHL 390 - Existentialism
  • PHL 402 - Nineteenth Century Philosophy
  • PHL 430 - Seminar in Ancient or Medieval Philosophy
  • PHL 440 - Seminar in Modern Philosophy
  • PHL 460 - Seminar in Marxism

Additionally, the Department occasionally offers special topics courses, and honors courses, in areas appropriate to both of these minors. These may be used in fulfillment of the "any three of the following" requirement by petition to the Department.
