Lecture Series

Colloquium Series

Each academic year in addition to our two endowed lecture series the philosophy department invites 4-5 speakers representing a wide range of philosophical interests and specializations.   Recent speakers include Dan Conway, Alice Crary, Debra Bergoffen, Kevin Miles, Dan Smith, Cynthia Willett, Ladelle McWhorter, and Martin Matustik.

Linda Singer Memorial Lecture Series

Linda Singer was a member of the philosophy department at Miami University until her death in 1990.   Her book, Erotic Welfare:   Sexual Theory and Politics in the Age of Epidemic was published posthumously in 1993, edited by Judith Butler.   Her family and others have endowed an annual lecture series in her memory in order to have speakers come to campus and talk on topics that were of import to her research; these include feminist theory, political theory, aesthetics, and social activism.   Speakers in the series have included Judith Butler, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Marilyn Frye, Elizabeth Spelman, Susan Bordo, Nancy Fraser, Joan Scott, Jane Gallop, Ewa Plonowska Ziarek, and Robyn Wiegman. The invited speaker gives one lecture and conducts a faculty and graduate student seminar/discussion session.

Harris Lecture Series

Robert T. Harris was the chair of the philosophy department from 1958 to 1969.   During that time he built the department from two professors and one major to a faculty of eight and over one hundred majors.   He was the co-author of Language and Informal Logic and the author of Social Ethics and various articles.   His friends and family have endowed an annual lecture series in his memory.   The lecture series brings speaker in social and political theory to campus.   Speakers in the series have included Onora O'Neill, Christine Korsgaard, Joseph Margolis, Henry Shue, Jim Nickel, Charles Mills, Linda Alcoff, and Ann Ferguson.
