“Philosophy is the discipline that involves creating concepts...the object of philosophy is to create concepts that are always new.”

Linda Singer Scholarship in Philosophy
Linda Singer was a member of Miami's
Philosophy Department from 1980 to
1990, when she died of cancer at age
39. In her ten years as a faculty
member, Linda was a very productive
scholar and valued colleague: she
finished her doctoral dissertation
and received her Ph.D (from S.U.N.Y.
Binghamton) in 1981; presented fifty-seven
papers at professional forums; published
fourteen articles or book chapters;
and wrote a book, Erotic
Welfare: Sexual Theory and Politics
in the Age of Epidemic ,
which was published posthumously.
Her work ranged over a wide variety
of topics, among them feminism, postmodernism,
politics and repression, film, dance,
Nietzsche, Merleau-Ponty, language
and libido.
In honor of Linda Singer, and thanks
to the generosity of her parents Eugene
and Vivian Singer, the Department
of Philosophy annually awards a scholarship
to a Miami University sophomore or
junior whose primary or secondary
major is philosophy. The scholarship
(approximately $2,500) will be for
a student's junior and/or senior year
of study.
Miami University students currently
in their sophomore or junior year
(by virtue of class standing) are
encouraged to apply for the scholarship
by submitting an application to the
Department of Philosophy. The formal
application should include a letter
of application, a statement of goals
and purposes in pursuing the study
of philosophy, a writing sample, at
least one letter of recommendation
from a college faculty member, and
official transcripts. Awards are made
by the Department of Philosophy and
are based primarily on academic merit.
