“Abstract intellectual thought
alone does not reach down deep
into our emotive energies and
give them form and direction.
Concrete dramatic images
in historical, literary, or some
artistic form speak more powerfully
and reach deeper into the inner
regions of the human heart.
They speak to and engage the whole
person.” E.M. Adams |

My work focuses on the intersection
of metaphysics, morality, and moral
theory by challenging two widely held
ideas: (1) that ethics is a specialized
field in which philosophers can work
and teach with a disregard for other
kinds of philosophical issues, especially
metaphysical problems; and (2) that
epistemological and metaphysical issues
can be separated from moral philosophy
and the humanistic dimension of life
and culture with which moral philosophy
is concerned. Of particular interest
are issues in philosophy of mind and
the plausibility of epistemological
and metaphysical presuppositions of
scientific naturalism and the implications
of these presuppositions for the role
cognitive science is alleged to have
in explaining human behavior and experience.
My concern is with developing a realistic
metaphysics for the humanities in
general and value theory in particular.
