The department of philosophy at Miami University has nine full-time faculty members with a diverse array of research interests, and offers a broad range of courses and research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. We are committed to a pluralistic outlook and offer courses in Analytic, Continental, and Non-Western philosophy, with the history of philosophy emphasized as the common ground of all of these. For undergraduates, the department offers a major and two minors (in History of Philosophy and in Ethics), as well as three Thematic Sequences. For graduate students, we offer a two-year M.A. with funding. Two members of the department of philosophy also edit a national philosophy journal, philoSOPHIA: A Journal of Continental Feminism.
Mark Thompson, currently at the The University of Chicago Law School, talks about how his Philosophy professors were his biggest mentors while at Miami because they taught him how to analyze issues and problems in way helpful to the study of law.
"Working in philosophy—like work in architecture in many respects—is really more a working on oneself…on one's way of seeing things (and what one expects of them)."—Wittgenstein
