Letter from the Director
When I co-founded the Ohio Writing Project (OWP), a site of the National Writing Project (NWP), in 1980 with Miami Professor Max Morenberg (now Professor Emeritus), we wished to offer strong professional development for teachers in southwest Ohio and to improve students’ writing by improving the teaching of writing throughout our area. Preparing now in 2009 to celebrate our 30th anniversary, we at the OWP are proud that we've paired so many years now with the Ohio Board of Regents to provide quality workshops and classes for thousands of teachers in our state. In 2008 alone, we served over 2000 K-12 teachers in 75 different programs. Our Masters of Arts in Teaching, housed (as we are) in the English Department is thriving. We continue to work to provide contemporary and practical professional development and are gratified to receive outstanding evaluations from teachers in our efforts. We are proud that external evaluations show over and over that OWP teachers rank our workshops as timely, effective, and better than other training they’ve taken.
We are pleased, too, that with funding from the Ohio Board of Regents and the U.S. Department of Education, we can offer substantial scholarships to most of our programs. Miami University’s continued dedication to teacher development is clear as well in its TEAM Scholarship, offering 50% tuition and fee reduction to classroom teachers in Ohio. As we continue to build our programs, we will keep in mind our belief—that OWP should be above all else a place to honor the wisdom of teachers. That belief has served us well these past three decades and will continue to see us along the path.
