The Master of Arts in Teaching program is an innovative degree designed for working K-12 teachers. The 32-hour degree can be completed in as few as three summers and does not require a thesis. Classes are offered on campus during the summer and online during the school year.

Choose any six hours of writing classes in addition to the four-week Workshop on the Teaching of Writing to fulfill your writing core. These classes will explore models of writing instruction at every grade level and examine research to support improved teaching.
Classroom Application I

Apply OWP principles and practices to find out what works for you and your students. You will correspond via email with an Action Research Advisor as you try out new ideas, implement new techniques, and experiment with new strategies. Prerequisite: Teaching of Writing
Classroom Application II

Continue to refine the reflective teaching practice you began in the first semester as you explore the nature of action research and how it relates to your teaching. You will work with your Action Research Advisor to understand the process and look at specific topics for your individual research. Prerequisite: Classroom Application I

Choose any combination of OWP classes to fulfill your reading core. These classes will explore models of reading instruction at every grade level and examine research to support improved instruction.
Action Research

Work with your Action Research Advisor to develop a classroom research project, choose a research model, explore research to support your project, and design the study. Prerequisites: Classroom Application I and II

Work with a faculty advisor and your Action Research Advisor to ensure a successful paper to complete your MAT and to present at the OWP/MAT Conference. Prerequisites: Classroom Application I, Classroom Application II, and Action Research

Learn principles of successful presentations and refine your final project presentation in preparation for the OWP/MAT Conference. Prerequisites: Classroom Application I, Classroom Application II, Action Research, and Teacher as Researcher

 

 

Application Process

1 Call the OWP office at 513-529-5245 or email Linda Tatman, Assistant Director,at tatmanlg@muohio.edu to schedule an application appointment.

2 Apply to the Miami University Graduate School.

3 Submit a statement of goals to describe your teaching strengths and objectives along with a resume detailing your teaching experience.

4 If you are not an OWP associate, submit a letter of recommendation from your principal, department chair, curriculum director, or other school official.

You may also meet with the Financial Aid office to arrange any needed assistance.

FAQs

Do I need to take the GRE?
The GRE is not required if you are a certified teacher.


I have taken OWP classes but I have never taken the four-week workshop. Do I need to do that?

All MAT candidates must complete the four-week Teaching of Writing workshop as part of the Writing Core before taking the online Classroom Application class.


I took the four-week workshop a few years back. Will it still count?

Students with OWP credit that is more than five years old may petition the Graduate School to have their credit apply to the MAT.


Will OWP offer Writing and Reading Core classes during the school year?

Occasionally, OWP may offer one and two credit hour workshops during the school year.


May I take classes offered through the English or Education Departments at Miami instead of OWP classes?
You may substitute up to 6 semester hours for OWP classes. Substitutions will be made on an individual basis.


Are there scholarships available?

OWP and WINS Scholarships will be awarded on a limited and competitive basis; priority will be given to candidates who have not yet completed the four-week Workshop on the Teaching of Writing. The TEAM Scholarship at Miami University provides a 50% tuition and fee reduction for all Ohio Licensed K-12 educators residing in Ohio and employed full-time in an Ohio K-12 school or school district office. Any educator who meets these requirements will be automatically eligible for a TEAM scholarship.

Teacher Education Access at Miami (TEAM Scholarship)

The TEAM Scholarship at Miami University provides a 50% tuition and fee reduction for all OWP workshops and classes. The TEAM Scholarship, available to K-12 educators, will reduce the cost of a three-credit OWP workshop from $1,340.73 to $670.37.

Any educator who meets the following requirements will automatically be eligible for the 50 percent scholarship:

• Educator is a full time teacher or administrator in an Ohio school district or school (public, private or charter).
• Educator holds a provisional or professional license or holds a standard certificate issued by the State of Ohio.
• Educator is a resident of the State of Ohio.
• Degree(s) or course(s) or continuing education workshop(s) is part of the educator's approved professional development plan.

OWP Scholarships

OWP and WINS Scholarships are awarded on a competitive and limited basis. Priority is given to those applying to the four-week Workshop on the Teaching of Writing. To apply for a scholarship, complete the questions below in detail and email your response to Monica Fisher, fishermv@muohio.edu, by March 31, 2008.
