Surveys

The Office of Institutional Research is involved in the preparation, administration and dissemination of a variety of student, faculty and staff surveys at Miami University. Summaries of the results of these surveys are made available to relevant groups.

Miami participates in several national surveys that allow comparisons of Miami students/faculty members with benchmark institutions. Here is a brief synopsis of these:

Surveys from the Center for Postsecondary Research at Indiana University:

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) - samples freshmen and seniors. Questions students about their academic experiences and satisfaction. Includes questions such as the number of term papers they wrote for courses, the level of academic challenge they perceive in courses, etc. Years available: 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004.

Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) - samples faculty members. Questions are designed to mirror the NSSE. Years available: 2004.

Surveys from the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA:

Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) - Miami has participated in this annual survey since 1970. Incoming freshmen are asked about a variety of subjects ranging from their political views to their study habits in high school.

Your First College Year (YFCY) - surveys freshmen in their second semester of college. Questions geared toward academic and social adjustment to college. Years available: 2002, 2004.

College Student Survey (CSS) - surveys seniors; designed to follow the CIRP. Measures cognitive and affective growth during college years. Years available: 1998, 1999, 2001, 2004.

HERI Faculty Survey - samples faculty members. Questions include job satisfaction, workload, teaching methods, etc. Years available: 1995, 1998, 2001, 2004.

Internally Developed Surveys:

Graduate Student Survey - survey of Miami graduate students done in Spring 2005. Measures graduate student experiences and satisfaction.

Miami University Campus Climate Survey - surveys students, faculty and staff regarding perceptions of the campus climate by gender, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. Years available: 1995, 1998, 2002. Shorter "dashboard" version available for 2003 and 2004.

Reports of survey data may be obtained by contacting our office. Some reports are available on the web sites of other Miami offices: a report on the Campus Climate Survey is available on the web site for the Provost's office. Many results from the surveys mentioned above are woven into the narrative of Miami's Accreditation Self-Study Report.
