Miami SUMSRI Nationally Recognized

Miami University's Summer Undergraduate Mathematical Science Research Institute (SUMSRI) is one of two exemplary programs nationwide that have been selected as "Mathematics Programs That Make a Difference" by the American Mathematical Society's Committee on the Profession. The programs were recognized for their "outstanding work in training and mentoring students from minority groups underrepresented in the profession.

Miami University Interdisciplinary Technology Development Challenger (MUITDC) topic for 2008-2009 is Recovered Energy Systems. The MUITDC undergraduate research opportunity fosters interdisciplinary development research by providing teams of undergraduate students the means todevelop and demonstrate a technology at the laboratory scale, to provide fiscal projections that indicate a financial viability, and to identify policy issues that incorporate esthetic and societal concerns. Deadline to submit MUITDC entry form via e-mail to Martha Weber was September 29, 2008.

Undergraduate Presentation Awards small awards to assist Miami University students to present the results of their independent research or other creative activities at professional conferences and meetings. On going deadline.


Miami Undergraduate Summer Scholars Program Round 2 - Spring Submission Deadline February 29, 2008 (submission limited to students submitting through a Fine Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences disciplines.

For 2008 Miami announced two important program changes that align with President Hodge’s call for “active, engaged educational experiences for our undergraduates through the fusion of scholarship and teaching”. In particular, the 2008 USS program now encourages students to create an enriched synergistic learning opportunity by combining a departmentally approved international experience with a complimentary USS program research project. In addition, a second round of funding in the spring has been added to encourage application from students majoring in Fine Arts and Humanities and Social Science disciplines where the fall deadline has limited their participation.
