FYRE-Join an Existing Student-Led Research Team

How Do Students Get Involved for spring semester 2010?
First Year Research Experience (FYRE) announces opportunities for students to engage in research and to establish early contact with faculty mentors. Click here to download the FYRE Program detailed information for Spring research project involvement.

1) Between Nov 1, 2009 and January 20, 2010 - Interview at least one faculty member. Click here to see faculty project information. Or interview one of the student team leaders in Chemistry or Zoology to discuss joining the team.

2) Fill out and submit the signed FYRE application form by January 20, 2010 to Martha Weber Undergraduate Research Coordinator in the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship, Click here to download the FYRE application form in MS Word format.
Spring 2010 Program Options

Students may choose one three tracks:

  • FYRE STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
  • FYRE Research Shadowing (Students experience the research environment without fully participating in an ongoing project)
  • FYRE TEAM RESEARCH (Research project conducted with a team of students) First year students are invited to interview / current teams. View current team projects at FYRE Student Team Research Experience
All options require students to additionally engage in common seminar/workshop experiences, and participate in the annual undergraduate research forum sponsored by the Office for the Advancement of Research (OARS).

Goals and Objectives
  • engage first-year students in faculty research early in their academic careers within a postsecondary setting.
  • enhance communication and presentation skills.
  • foster the development of a community of student researchers/scholars within the first year experience by providing educational enrichment opportunities and ways for first year students to interact, network, socialize and collaborate together.
  • increase first year student participation in other research activities at Miami University throughout their undergraduate career.
