OBOR funds three Miami programs for improving teacher quality in the state

Three Miami programs have been awarded a combined $814,444 from the Ohio Board of Regents for the Improving Teacher Quality Program. For the second year in a row Miami received the largest amount going to one university.

Across the state, 22 Improving Teacher Quality Program awards to 15 universities were announced in mid January. Miami's Programs involve continuing projects in mathematics and the sciences, and potentially will reach ore than 1,280 educators.

"It's vital that children learn from teachers who are not only knowledgeable but comfortable with the sciences and mathematics. It's rewarding to know that Miami has a large role in improving Ohio student and teacher competency across the state," said John Skillings, interim provost.

These are the Miami programs funded:

  • 294,637 for iDiscovery: Sustaining Professional Development through Web-Based Learning Communities, led by Terry McCollum, Discovery Center statewide director of K-12 Programs, and Christopher Myers and R. Hays Cummins, interdisciplinary studies.
  • $219,841 for Across the Curriculum Environmental Science to Attain Ohio Elementary School Academic Content Standards and Achievement Test Outcomes, led by Robert McWilliams, geology emeritus, and Richard Lee Jr., zoology.
  • $299,970 for Advancing Ohio's Physical Science Proficiency III, led by Arlyne Sarquis, chemistry and biochemistry, Miami Middletown.
