A novel of conjugate of carbohydrates and protein -- known as a "glycodendriprotein" -- may provide a new route to antibiotics.

Chemist Benjamin G. Davis of the University of Oxford, in England; microbiologist Marjorie M. (Kelly) Cowan of Miami University of Ohio, Oxford; and coworkers have shown that by linking branched carbohydrate-tipped structures known as glycodendrimers to a protein-degrading enzyme, they can inhibit the infectivity of the bacterium Actinomyces naeslundii {J. Michael Kennedy

Michael Kennedy's new Eminent Scholar Laboratory will also serve as an integral component of the Northeast Structural Genomics Consortium, led by Dr. Gaetano Montelione of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, which has a goal of high-throughput protein structure and function characterization. A grant of $391,235 from NIH has been received for FY 07 activities in Kennedy's lab.

Kiss' project is one of only two experiments launched on the shuttle Discovery that will actually be performed on the International Space Station (ISS) at this time, Kiss professor of botany, has been awarded more than $1 million by NASA over the past six years for "Tropi, Analysis of a Novel Sensory Mechanism in Root Phototropism," an experiment to study how plant roots respond to varying levels of both light and gravity.

Ohio Board of Regents logo

1/18/2007 Three Miami programs have been awarded a combined $814,448 from the Ohio Board of Regents for the Improving Teacher Quality Program. It's the largest amount going to one university.

Miami funded programs are:

  • 294,637 for iDiscovery: Sustaining Professional Development through Web-Based Learning Communities, led by Terry McCollum, Discovery Center statewide director of K-12 Programs, and Christopher Myers and R. Hays Cummins, interdisciplinary studies.
  • $219,841 for Across the Curriculum Environmental Science to Attain Ohio Elementary School Academic Content Standards and Achievement Test Outcomes, led by Robert McWilliams, geology emeritus, and Richard Lee Jr., zoology.
  • $299,970 for Advancing Ohio's Physical Science Proficiency III, led by Arlyne Sarquis, chemistry and biochemistry, Miami Middletown.
