COLLEGE
OF ARTS AND SCIENCE - A&S
- A&S FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.
Deadlines for the three rounds are typically in October December;
and February. Full-time or part-time
continuing faculty may receive only $700 in each category per
academic
year. Departmental cost sharing is encouraged. Contact: College

- A&S Small Instructional Grants. This program is
intended to enhance teaching excellence in the college. Small
awards will be available to faculty members planning a project
or activity that promises to contribute directly to their preparation
and effectiveness as teachers, including advising. This program
is designed specifically to assist with such expenses as startup
costs for innovative new teaching techniques, costs of new instructional
materials, aids, or software, costs of upgrading university-owned
computers necessary to run the software (e.g. a hard disk drive,
math coprocessor, graphics upgrade), teaching evaluation instruments,
attendance at instructional development and/or computing workshops,
and preparation of grant proposals for instructional projects.
The program will not support the purchase of personal computers.
- A&S Small Research Grants. This program is intended
to help faculty members of the college conduct research and
scholarly or creative activities. No funding can be provided
for expenses associated with doctoral dissertation. This program
is designed specifically to help with the developmental costs
of preparing a grant proposal, special travel or other needs
associated with a research project or grant preparation including
upgrading university-owned computers (e.g. a hard disk drive,
math coprocessor, graphics upgrade), and acquisition costs of
a data set or printed materials not otherwise funded.
- A&S SMALL GRANT PROGRAM FOR A&S
CLASSIFIED STAFF. These grants are intended to encourage/assist
classified staff participation in activities which might enhance
their work and career goals. Examples of activities which would
qualify include the general fee and the cost of books for Miami
university courses, travel costs associated with professional development
opportunities, or financial assistance for fees for participation
in a conference or seminar which would contribute to the enhancement
of the professional skills of the staff member. Maximum award is
$150 for a total of $300 per fiscal year. For more information contact:

MIAMI UNIVERISTY OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
- Philip and Elaina Hampton Fund for Faculty International Initiatives. Hampton funds support Miami faculty to conduct research abroad, including faculty who participate in approved international faculty development seminar programs. The goal is to assist faculty in increasing the international dimension of knowledge and perspective contained in courses taught at Miami University, with the ultimate aim of increasing the capacity of Miami students to function effectively in a global and multicultural environment. Multiple awards totaling approximately $15,000 are recommended to the Provost twice a year by the Hampton Reading Committee and announced by its chair, the Director of International Education. The typical individual grant ranges between $2,000 and $4,000. Guidelines and application materials are available below. Typical deadlines are: mid-October and mid-March of each year.
- Faculty Development Fund for International Travel The Fund offers partial financial support to faculty making invited research presentations at international conferences or professional meetings abroad. Applications are submitted via the Department Chair and Divisional Dean on the form available from the Director of International Education, below. Grants from the Faculty Development Fund typically range up to $300, depending on the cost of attendance and the funding provided by the department and division. Due to limited funding, early application is strongly recommended.

SCHOOL
OF FINE ARTS - SFA
- CROSSAN HAYS CURRY DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR AWARD. In 1994 an award named for Professor Emeritus Crossan Hays Curry was established recognizing distinguished faculty in the School of Fine Arts. Professor Curry was greatly admired by students for his teaching and his art making. This award honors outstanding faculty in the School of Fine Arts who have, in a similar manner, blended creative and scholarly achievements to the advantage of student learning. The packet
is reviewed by the SFA Committee on the Enhancement of Learning
and Teaching and a recommendation is made to the Dean. The award

- SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP AND TEACHING GRANTS.
These grants have been established to support faculty and staff
research, creativity and teaching. The fund encompasses all departments
and programs within the School and is intended to serve as a source
for one-time needs or as seed money for projects that will be supported
by external funding sources. Proposals may be submitted for either
the fall semester or Spring semester funding rounds due October

THE
JOHN E. DOLIBOIS MIAMI UNIVERSITY EUROPEAN CENTER-MUDEC IN LUXEMBOURG
- VISITING PROFESSOR. Visiting Professors teach a course
on an approved program at the Dolibois European Center. In the past,
one had to be eligible for a faculty improvement or assigned research
leave. This is under review and may no longer be required. Those
appointed will continue to receive their Miami University salary
and benefits, plus a $3,000 relocation allowance. Applications are generally due in the beginning of November.
- BASE COURSE APPOINTMENTS. There are two appointments per
year. Appointments are for one or two years in consultation with
the MUDEC Dean. Applicants for two-year appointments may request
$3,000 for relocation (for one-year: $1,500). Base faculty on two-year
appointments receive round-trip airfare to Luxembourg for faculty
and family and round-trip airfare for a home visit at the end of
the first year of service, a baggage allowance of $1,500 for a single
faculty member and $3,000 for faculty accompanied by their family,
a housing allowance, and a foreign post allowance based on cost-of-living
adjustments. They may apply for a special summer grant of $4,000
for research not possible during the academic year or on-site preparation
for the MUDEC courses. Selection is by the MUDEC Dean in consultation
with the MUDEC Subcommittee. Information will be distributed in
the fall semester. The deadline for a one-page statement of interest
will be mid-February and the full proposal will
be due the beginning of April. Application

- MUM Internal Funding Opportunities for Faculty
Faculty Development Fund: Additional travel or projects that require funding assistance may be funded by the Faculty Development Fund managed by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Acceptable projects, (i.e., legitimate requests for travel or funding for educational purposes) are funded on a first-come first-serve basis. The application form can be found above by clicking on “Faculty”. Funds are also available for part-time faculty (see link above). Because of the first-come first-serve nature of these (finite) funds, you should plan ahead for trips and projects and apply as early in the year as possible.
- CLASSIFIED AND UNCLASSIFIED STAFF DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
These funds are made available for faculty and staff as
appropriate at Miami University Middletown. Requests for funds are
made according to a schedule published in the fall. For additional
information about these funds and any possible deadlines, please
contact the Dean's office.
- MIAMI UNIVERSITY MIDDLETOWN, CONTINUING EDUCATION, CREDIT AND

INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY SERVICES-IT
- Course Materials. This program includes instructional handouts
and instructional materials (tests are not included). Instructional
handouts that are given to students during class will be kept on
file by ITand copied at no charge as the hadnouts are needed (with
copyright approval). Instructional materials such as digital content
put on CDs, DVDs and Web sites will also be provided at no charge
to faculty. The material must contain course content, or information
which the student will be responsible for learning. Contact:

- Print Center Copying. Funding for copying of materials
for instruction is up to $20 a semester (not each course) per faculty

- Proposal Development. IT provides cost estimates to faculty
or staff who are preparing budgets for research proposals or grant

established by the Office of the Provost to be used in meeting cost-sharing

FUNDING,
AWARD, AND GRANT PROGRAMS COORDINATED BY OARS
COMMITTEE ON FACULTY RESEARCH
Guidelines for this University Senate Committee program are distributed in August. Check eligibility requirements for each of the CFR programs.
The deadline October 1, 2009, except
for Publication, Reprint, Exhibition, and Performance Costs-PREP. For all programs except the PREP Program, CFR encourages proposals
addressing new avenues of research and scholarship either for
the investigator or for the institution, initiating new projects
and pilot studies, or testing novel or controversial research/creative
ideas. CFR expects investigators to seek extramural support for
continuing research and scholarship.
OHIO BOARD OF REGENTS
- Investment Fund, Ohio Board of Regents - OBR. The Fund
provides an opportunity to establish multi-university research
consortia and programs within Ohio. Deadlines are usually announced
in September.
- Research Incentive Program, Ohio Board of Regents -
OBR. Research Challenge provides grants for pilot projects with
potential for attracting external funds.

SHOUPP AWARDS
Miami University Research Advisory Council-MURAC. The Shoupp
Awards support initial and exploratory activities involving Miami
University faculty and students with industry. It is anticipated
that this "seed money" will lead to external funding for a major
project, either from industry or government. Applications are widely distributed to departments and areas in late January
each year with a mid-March deadline. For further

OFFICE
OF CONTINUING EDUCATION- OCE, OXFORD CAMPUS
Information is available about the following opportunities from
Continuing Education, 127 McGuffey Hall, 529-8600; CEP@muohio.edu.
CREDIT WORKSHOP INCENTIVE FUND. This fund was established
principally to encourage development of new international and
domestic off-campus credit workshops. Funds of up to $1,000 are
available for two major purposes: (1.) travel expenses for Miami
faculty and administrators to investigate potential sites or make
arrangements for new workshops, and (2.) support for new workshops
that may operate at a loss during their first year or two. For
further information see Guidelines for Credit Workshop Proposals,
available from the Office of Continuing Education, Oxford.
CREDIT WORKSHOPS. Miami's credit workshop mechanism provides
faculty with opportunities to conduct domestic and international
credit programs for diverse audiences. Budgets, which are enrollment-contingent,
can include faculty stipends, travel, and other program expenses.
Proposal forms and guidelines are available year-round, with annual
updates available in September. Please note: to be included in
the Miami University Summer Class Schedule, proposals must be
submitted early in October, and be fully approved in early December.
NON-CREDIT PROGRAMS (Oxford Campus). Staff assistance
in planning, budgeting, and conducting self-supporting non-credit
workshops, conferences, seminars, and classes is available from
the Office of Continuing Education, Oxford. Staff can also provide
consultation on arrangements and costs regarding facilities, registration,
administrative support, marketing, and program requirements to
faculty who are preparing grant and contract proposals for external
support for conferences, workshops, and meetings.
OFFICE
OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTAND SERVICE
SPECIAL EVENTS GRANTS. These grants provide assistance
for enhanced learning experiences that encourage student interaction
with faculty or staff, for example, field trips to special exhibits
or seminars. Grants partially offset the expense to student participants,
with student participants assuming a share of the program costs.

OFFICE
OF THE PROVOST
PRESIDENT'S ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AWARD. This award was made
possible through the bequest of Arretha Cornell Sheriff, '18,
and
seeks to enrich the intellectual climate of the University.
Annual income from the gift, approximately $300,000, can be awarded
for faculty projects designed to transform what we do in higher
education. Successful proposals will build upon areas of strength
within Miami and ideally will break traditional boundaries that
exist within the University structure. Proposals are sought
from groups of faculty and will be evaluated by the President's
Academic Enrichment Awards Committee each spring. This faculty
committee will then make recommendations for funding to the Provost
and President. A two-page Letter of Intent is due in November. The call for proposals, guidelines, and summaries

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT FUND FOR CLASSIFIED SUPPORT STAFF.
The Human Resources Department administers a fund which is available
to assist departments in providing work related training and education
opportunities for their classified support staff. The fund is available
to provide matching dollar grants, within stated limits, for training,

UNIVERSITY
HONORS PROGRAM - UHP
UNIVERSITY HONORS SEMINARS
An opportunity for faculty to teach lower-level honors seminars
limited to twenty students per course. Seminars are normally three
credit courses that meet the College of Arts and Science and Miami
Plan Foundation requirements, and provide diverse opportunities
for students to develop the skills required for intellectual leadership,
to gain experience in the in-depth analysis of issues, and to hone
their critical reasoning abilities. A limited number of advanced
seminars are also offered each semester. Some funding is available for special course projects.
