Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

Welcome to the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) home page! At Miami University, we are committed to the development and enhancement of ethical practices in research and scholarship among our faculty, staff and students.  As research and federal regulations continue to evolve, issues of research integrity remain a key focus of information and training for the university community.

In light of this effort, the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship has implemented an RCR Program in an effort to inform and support the high professional and ethical standards of research at Miami University. It is our firm belief that through awareness and training of RCR issues, Miami faculty, students and staff will further enhance their overall learning experience as members of our academic community. In addition, increasing the existing knowledge base of the value and importance of responsible practices in research and scholarship supports one of Miami's First in 2009 goals of “Creating a richer intellectual and cultural life.”

Miami University has also demonstrated its commitment to RCR as an organizational member of the Responsible Conduct of Research Education Consortium (RCREC). As a member of RCREC, Miami University, along with other institutions and organizations, works diligently to fulfill the mission of providing “leadership to the research community in identifying, developing and promoting programs of education in the responsible conduct of research.”

RCR Program goals include, but are not limited to:

  • create an environment that is conducive to promoting research integrity
  • meet the federal requirements for training in ethical conduct
  • provide graduate students and post-doctoral fellows with the “survival skills” needed to aid in their successful matriculation during graduate school and/or their research training
  • enhance appreciation for ethical standards and professional development
  • develop core competencies in responsible conduct of research
  • increase understanding of ethical theories, guidelines and regulations regarding the practice of research
