It was created in 2000 to increase research opportunities for faculty, graduate students, and undergrads in cell, molecular, and structural biology. The CBFG employs full-time staff, who are available for training, operation, and maintenance of the Center's equipment. The equipment in the CBFG includes 4 Applied Biosystems capillary DNA sequencers, a robotic liquid handling system, Real-time PCR thermocyclers, a DNA microarray scanner, an Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer, a UV/VIS/fluoresecent plate reader, and a computer cluster for bioinformatic analyses. Center for Human Development, Learning, and TeachingDoris Bergen, Director Center for Industrial Organic ChemistryContact: Richard Taylor 529-2826 Center for Interactive Media StudiesGlenn J. Platt, Director The Center for Interactive Media Studies was established in 1996 to address the relevant issues and challenges of new media. Bridging traditional disciplinary boundaries, IMS offers students a unique opportunity at Miami: the ability work on truly interdisciplinary teams with students of vastly different majors (including Computer Science, MIS, English, Marketing, Graphic Design, Education) to learn to apply digital media technology in day-to-day work and life situations.Students from all majors can incorporate digital theory and development into their specific area of study. The Center is currently comprised of fifteen courses at all levels, two thematic sequences, an annual conference, and a summer internship program. There are also plans to submit an application to offer a minor and a third thematic sequence. One of the most successful highlights of the center is the senior capstone course that pairs interdisciplinary student teams with companies to create an interactive media product, to be used within the client companies' businesses.Center for Public Management and Regional AffairsPhilip A. Russo, Director The Center for Public Management and Regional Affairs engages in applied research, technical assistance services, training and education, and data base development in the areas of public management and capacity building, local government economic development and planning, and public program evaluation and policy research. The Center's activities are funded by external grants and contracts from a number of funding sources including the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration, the Ohio Public Works Commission, the Rural University Program, and the Ohio Township Association, and the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs. The Center's primary efforts are directed toward research and assistance to small/non-metropolitan cities, villages, townships, and counties. Center projects are initiated upon request from local governments or by Center staff as an ongoing program for various local governments in the region and statewide. Center for School-Based Mental Health ProgramsCarl E. Paternite, Director In existence since 1998, the Center for School-Based Mental Health Programs (CSBMHP) operates in affiliation with the Psychology Clinic in the Department of Psychology. University faculty, graduate students and community partners are involved in research, consultation, and clinical service initiatives. Center for Visual SciencesCo-directors: Del Rio-Tsonis and Michael L. Robinson The center aims to involve Miami University faculty, students and the community as a whole in its activities including a seminar series and outreach programs to educate the public on the importance of vision research. Other activities include the fostering of collaborative, vision-centered projects between the members of the center as well as with other faculty. The center also places importance on supporting graduate and undergraduate student vision research by providing student research awards. "Miami hopes that the Confucius Institute will become a major resource for the region, Ohio and the Midwest to help understand the changes in the international economy and to take advantage of the new opportunities posed by China's extraordinary growth. The institute will reach out to entrepreneurs across Ohio and the Midwest to help them understand how to do business with China. Provost Jeffrey Herbst noted, "Given Ohio's economic challenges, a critical role for our university is to help businesses understand that China is the greatest economic opportunity of our age. Corporate and Community Institute (CCI)Source the Miami Report 1/1/2008 CCI merges the continuing education functions on Miami's Middletown and Hamilton campuses and the future expansion to the Voice of America Learning Center, scheduled to open in January 2009.The CCI emphasizes training customized for the individual client. "Today, competitive advantage depends most critically on the skills of the workforce," said McNab. "As the work force is changing, so is the way employees are being trained for continuing success in the rapidly changing marketplace. The Corporate and Community Institute is poised to help area employers achieve performance excellence through programs focused on executive coaching, organizational development, quality and safety management, technology, human resource planning, job profiling and customer service, to name a few." Kahle, Principle Investigator). In 2000, Miami University recognized its success in reforming science and mathematics education across Ohio by establishing the Discovery Center. The Discovery Center focuses on providing professional development programs for teachers and school administrators through both face-to-face institutes and iDiscovery's Web. Boardman, Director The Institute of Environmental Sciences provides leadership in support of the University's environmental education goals by expanding environmental dimensions in learning, teaching, public service, research, and creative activities. The Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) was developed in 1969 within the Graduate School of Miami University and houses one of the oldest Master of Environmental Science (M. En.) professional degree programs in the United States. The IES philosophy emphasizes both a systematic and interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues as well as the effective communication of knowledge and information. IES has its own teaching and research facilities, director, deputy directors for academic affairs and research, and administrative staff. Approximately 100 University faculty members from 33 departments actively participate in the program. John T. Petters Center for Leadership, Ethics and Skills DevelopmentThe John T. Petters Center will be a wing of a planned new building for the Richard T. Farmer School of Business at Miami, with the gift from Thomas J. Petters supporting two endowed professorships, curricula development, and opportunities for students to practice and enhance their leadership and professional skills. According to Dean Jenkins, "The center will encourage interdisciplinary courses on ethics and leadership, ensure that these two subjects will be incorporated into introductory and intermediate courses in all business fields, sponsor seminars and conferences on ethics and leadership, and seek a national reputation for linking faculty scholarship with how students develop their skills in student organizations." Miami University Center for NanotechnologyGilbert E. Pacey, Director The Miami University Center for Nanotechnology (MUCN) is an interdisciplinary collaboration dedicated to the education, research, safety, and commercialization issues of nanotechnology. The unique phenomena exhibited by materials in the nanodomain opens new frontiers in basic and applied research that are revolutionary in nature. Miami University Partnership OfficeTom Poetter, Director (poettets@muohio.edu) The Miami University Partnership Office cultivates and extends school/university partnerships; grows partnerships between Miami and community/social service agencies; and connects faculty, staff and students in partnerships across campuses Ohio's Evaluation and Assessment Center for Mathematics and Science EducationJane Butler Kahle, Director McGuffey Hall Phone: (513) 529-1686 Ohio's Evaluation & Assessment Center for Mathematics and Science Education is a partnership between Miami University and the University of Cincinnati. The E & A Center evaluates the impact of programs related to science and mathematics education. The Center is nationally recognized for its evaluation and assessment expertise. The Center involves, as needed, affiliated faculty with expertise in specific areas from numerous departments at Miami University and at universities within Ohio and across the country. The Center is the repository of valid and reliable instruments to assess progress in mathematics and science education reform (including K-12 student achievement). Also, it maintains several large databases, allowing comparisons with similar groups, as appropriate. It is noted for its effective dissemination of evaluation and research findings through both scholarly and popular venues. Ohio Writing ProjectMary J. Fuller, Director (fullermj@muohio.edu) Since 1980, the Ohio Writing Project has been providing teachers and students with quality programs to help improve student writing. As a site of the National Writing Project, a network of programs dedicated to the professional development of K-12 writing teachers across the country, Ohio Writing Project provides a full spectrum of student assessment programs and professional development for teachers from all grade levels and subject areas. The cornerstone of OWP is the Workshop on the Teaching of Writing. Designed for K-12 teachers of all subject areas, this workshop examines contemporary approaches to the teaching of writing in an intensive, supportive environment. Ohio Writing Project faculty and staff also provide student assessments and school improvement services to school districts. The Resource Data Center for Community Disaster InterventionCDIS is an information system that enables communities to prepare for and respond to disasters and other emergencies. The information system is designed to support disaster response at the community level by providing access to high quality community health and human services resource information. Primary components of CDIS are a central data repository for the storage of local community and national resources, a standard taxonomy of defined words and categories for indexing and searching, web-based data entry tools, a robust search engine, reporting capabilities and administrative capabilities. The CDIS system includes a web-based system and a version for Pocket PCs. The project is now undergoing field testing at Red Cross chapters in the U.S. Douglas A. Troy, Director Scripps Foundation & Gerontology CenterSuzanne R. Kunkel, Director Scripps Gerontology Center is a research institution dedicated to generating and disseminating multidisciplinary aging related knowledge. Scripps also administers Miami University’s Academic Programs in Gerontology, which are offered through the Department of Sociology and Gerontology. develop entrepreneurial skills. Walter Havighurst Center of Russian and Post-Soviet StudiesKaren L. Dawisha,
Director The Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies was established as a result of a multi-million dollar gift from Walter Havighurst (1901-1994), a longtime Miami University English professor and author, who was deeply committed to improving mutual understanding between the United States and the former Soviet Union. Professor Havighurst taught at Miami from 1928-1969. The Center is interdisciplinary, drawing faculty from many departments throughout the University, brought together by their mutually held interests in exploring issues related to Russia and the post-Soviet world. The Havighurst Center is devoted to joint research at Miami University by Miami faculty, scholars from Russia, eastern Europe and Eurasia, and from American universities; to service and learning activities for the Miami student community in order to provide a greater understanding of this region; and to programs designed to foster interdisciplinary research on the most important questions relating to the future of this area.
