Information about Miami NROTC




General Information

Naval ROTC was founded at Miami in 1946. With satisfactory completion of Naval Science and Bachelor's degree requirements, graduates are commissioned as either an Ensign in the United States Navy, or Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

All NROTC programs are open to both men and women. Students may qualify for the Scholarship Program, College Program, or the Two-year Program.

Full ride scholarships, book money, a stipend, room and board, and commissioning opportunities are available for both prospective freshmen as well as current Miami students. Opportunities are available in aviation, submarines, surface ships, special warfare, medicine, and many Marine specialties.

Short Essay Competition

1.  Rear Admiral Elliott M. Senn, U.S. Navy (Ret) died in 1980 leaving a
portion of his will to the Department of the Navy to establish the
Thomas and Elliott M. Senn Memorial Fund.  The Navy accepted his
generous gift and invested it.  Interest income has grown to the point
where RADM Senn's educational purposes can now be fulfilled.  RADM
Senn's will has directed that a portion of that interest go to NROTC
midshipmen as prizes for essays written on naval topics.

2.  The contest is open to all undergraduate student personnel
affiliated with the NROTC Program in addition to those under
administrative control of the unit Professor of Naval Science
.  A
minimum of three (3) cash prizes, in the amount
of $1,000 each will be
awarded for the best essays.
  Winners will be selected from nominations
submitted by the PNS.

3.  Topic: Discuss the impact of nuclear powered submarines on US-Soviet
relations during the cold war (1945-1991).

    Background: In
January 17,1955, the USS NAUTILUS, under the command
of CDR Eugene P. Wilkinson, set sail as the first nuclear powered
submarine. Since that time, the stealth, diverse capabilities, endurance
and mobility of nuclear powered submarines have provided the
US Navy
with unparalleled access and defense throughout the world. From nuclear
deterrence of fleet ballistic missile submarines to the clandestine
operations of attack submarines, submarine operations were a critical
US
asset during the Cold War against the
Soviet Union.

4.  Due Date: 16 May 08.  Winners will be announced by 2 June 08.

5.  Essays must consist of double-spaced, typed papers of not more than
1500 words.  Competitors for this prize are required to submit their
essays to the PNS, the PNS will select the best essay from the unit and
forward it to NSTC Student Operations (Code OD4).

New Scholarship Available

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: Midshipmen majoring in the following or C4I-related fields of electrical, computer, chemical, systems or aerospace engineering; electronics; computer science; physics; mathematics; science or mathematics education; technology management; or other technical fields may apply for a $2000 AFCEA ROTC scholarship.  Applicants will automatically be submitted for a $3000 "Medal of Honor" scholarship as well.

Scholarship Program

Miami Students accepted into the Scholarship Program receive a monthly subsistence allowance and an allowance each semester for the purchase of textbooks. The Navy pays all registration and general fees, all tuition (in state or out of state), all instructional fees, all naval science textbooks, and furnishes all uniforms.

Between academic years, midshipmen participate in summer training periods held in various locations throughout the world. During these training periods, Midshipmen are furnished all meals, housing, medical care, travel expenses, and military pay. Upon commissioning, the current obligation is a minimum of four years on active duty.

Students can major in any field of study leading to a bachelor's degree; One can choose Navy Option, Navy Nurse Option, or Marine Corps Option.

Navy scholarship option. Navy Option Midshipmen take 31 semester hours of Naval Science, one year of calculus, one year of calculus-based physics, and one semester of Computer Science.

Navy nurse scholarship option. This program is for students seeking a commission in the Navy Nurse Corps. In addition to the school of nursing requirements, 18 semester hours of Naval Science is also required.

Marine scholarship option. Marine Option Midshipman are required to take 24 semester hours of Naval Science classes and one semester of American military affairs or national security policy. They must also complete six weeks of training at the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia during the summer between their junior and senior years.

 

College Program

Selection to this program is made by the Professor of Naval Science, based on evaluation of the applicant's potential to serve as a commissioned officer, ACT or SAT scores, and high school record. Recipients receive books and materials for all naval science courses, uniforms, $350 per month during their junior year, and $400 per month during their senior year.

Freshmen apply during the Summer Orientation Program. Applications are accepted, however, any time during a student's first two years at Miami. Please submit all applications to the NROTC Unit, Millett Hall.

Midshipmen participate in one summer training period, normally the summer between their junior and senior years. During training, meals, housing, and medical care are furnished, and you receive military pay and reimbursement for cruise travel expenses. Upon being commissioned, the obligation is a minimum of three years on active duty.

Students can compete for Navy and Marine Corps scholarships throughout your first two years in the NROTC program. You follow the same requirements as the scholarship students while competing for those scholarships.

 

Two-Year Program

Sophomores can apply for the two-year program at the NROTC Unit, Millett Hall. Selection is based upon your cumulative grade point average and potential as a commissioned officer. Once selected, you must attend the Naval Science Institute at Newport, Rhode Island, between your sophomore and junior years. Midshimpen then enter NROTC as a junior in the scholarship or college program. You have the same benefits and take the same naval science courses as other NROTC students.

 

Other Information

NROTC midshipmen may change from the Navy to the Marine Corps option, or vice versa, anytime during their first three years at Miami provided they are qualified and both services agree.

Scholarship program midshipmen do not incur any obligation until the beginning of their sophomore year. College program midshipmen do not incur any obligation until the beginning of their junior year.

Initial duty assignments depend upon needs of the service and the individual's preference, qualifications, and performance. Navy option midshipmen may choose assignments in naval aviation, nuclear submarines, or surface warfare. Marine option midshipmen also choose from a variety of assignments, including aviation, combat arms, and combat support.
