Travelling Drill Competitions
To better develop camaraderie, leadership, and competitiveness, Miami University NROTC participates in several drill competitions. These competitions include endurance races, pistol shooting, rifle shooting, sailing regattas, color guard competitions, squad drill, platoon drill, and exhibition drilling. The number of schools attending the competitions range from 12 to 60. This year Miami University NROTC will attend drill meets in Madison, Wisconsin; New Orleans, Louisiana; West Lafayette, Indiana; and Boulder, Colorado.
Sentries Drill Team
Sentries Drill Team is a university recognized club specializing in close order drill. Each year Sentries performs a routine for the university's parent’s weekend and an exhibition routine for the annual Presidential Review. All Marine option midshipmen, along with a handful of Navy midshipmen, dedicate countless hours to making the drill team a productive and successful unit.
Unit Color Guard
The Color Guard performs many services for both Miami University NROTC and the surrounding community. Color Guards are provided for many NROTC events, local and University parades. They also are provided for home baseball, football and basketball games.
Pistol Club
The NROTC Unit has an indoor small caliber range located in the unit spaces. The Pistol Club, which is school sponsored, is open to all students and focuses on firearm familiarization and the basic fundamentals of marksmanship, firearms and safety.
Marine Corps/Navy Birthday Ball
The MACNAV ball is a very special time of year for our company. The company gets dressed up for this formal event to celebrate the Navy and Marine Corps Birthday. The ball consists of a social hour, followed by a speech from our guest of honor, then an excellent dinner (free for midshipmen), and the traditional cake cutting ceremony. Then the rest of the night consists of dancing.
Sports
The unit usually fields football, soccer, and softball teams during the fall semester. They also have competitive volleyball, basketball and broomball. All members of the teams have a great time competing in athletic events. The unit also sponsors challenges against the Air Force cadets in Ice Hockey in the Goggin Arena and football at Yager Stadium.
Presidential Review
To honor the President of Miami University, the midshipmen of the Naval ROTC Company and the cadets of the Air Force ROTC detachment perform a military parade every spring. This event is held in Millett Hall, and involves a pass in review before Miami's president and other distinguished guests. In addition to the parade, numerous awards are given to the cadets and midshipmen for outstanding performance. The Admiral Souers Distinguished Alumni Award, chosen by Miami alumni, is given to an alumnus who has served the country and community with distinction.
Parents’ Weekend
Every year the company hosts a parents’ weekend in conjunction with Miami University's Parents' Weekend. In addition to University activities the unit holds a Sentries Drill Team demonstration, an open house and a lunch. Following lunch, parents and midshipmen attend a Redhawk football game.
Surface Warfare Club (SWO club)
The SWO Club, initiated during the fall 2005, is an addition to the Naval Science curriculum for interested NROTC members to gain insight into common shipboard activities. These activities include: shipboard communications, wardroom etiquette, watch standing, organizational structure, and other general shipboard procedures.
Semper Fi Society
The Semper Fidelis (meaning “Always Faithful”) Society is an organization established and run by Marines and Marine Option Midshipmen within the Miami University Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. The society meets once weekly. The primary purpose of the Semper Fi Society is to prepare Midshipmen for Officer Candidate School and a commission in the United States Marine Corps.
