Former Lab Members

Scott Naples

Scott is a senior zoology major and has worked in the cricket lab for three years. He has learned tissue processing and paraffin sectioning, immunohistochemistry and electrophysiology. He has received numerous grants from Miami University to support his research, including the Doctoral-Undergraduate Opportunities in Scholarship (DUOS) Grant in 2005, an Undergraduate Summer Scholarship in 2004 and Undergraduate Research Grant Awards in 2004 and 2006. Scott is an avid athlete and has successfully run several marathons. He will enter a graduate program in Exercise Science after graduation.

Adam Welch

Adam is a senior zoology major. He has worked in the cricket lab since his freshman year at Miami and has become proficient in several techniques including tissue histology, the mapping of identified neurons by dye-backfilling, immunostaining, and scanning electron microscopy. He is currently using SEM to analyze the anatomy and development of hair plates on cricket appendages. Adam received Undergraduate Research Grants from Miami University in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Adam will attend Ross Medical School starting in fall, 2006.

Nick Maull

Nick is a senior zoology major collaborating on the Fos neural mapping project and is best known for his crucial role in the ‘Cricket on a Stick' project. Recently, he has been using electrophysiology to map brain pathways activated by the cricket antenna and, in 2006, he received an Undergraduate Research Grant Award to pursue this project. In his spare time, Nick works as a golf instructor. He plans to attend medical school after graduation.

Mallisa Frost

Mallisa is a senior zoology major who joined the lab in the fall of 2005. She has been involved in a research project to stain and map the locations of intersegmental interneurons that span the entire cricket CNS and she has become proficient in the sectioning of resin embedded tissue. Mallisa will be attending Ohio State University 's graduate program in Health Administration starting fall, 2006.

Jacob Gunzenheuser

Jake is a senior zoology major and is part of the research group that looks at neural mapping of behavioral pathways in the cricket brain using c-Fos as a marker. He has also been working with Nick and Scott on the electrophysiological project and was co-PI on the Undergraduate Research Grant Award that the three received from Miami University in 2006. Jake will be joining the University of Cincinnati Medical School in fall, 2006, and plans to become an anesthesiologist.

Joshua Hittle

Josh is a senior zoology major who joined the lab in the summer of 2005. He has been part of our research group that is studying the role of neurogenesis in the formation of social memories in the cricket brain and has been primarily involved in behavioral analyses of fighting crickets. Josh received a Miami University Research Grant Award in 2006 to support his research project. Josh plans to attend a graduate program in pharmaceutical science following graduation.

Nora Fritz

Nora is a junior zoology major and has worked in the lab since her sophomore year. She has been collaborating on the neurogenesis project and has assisted in the processing and analysis of immunocytochemically stained CNS tissue. She has received funding from Miami University to support her project. Nora plans to attend a graduate program in physical therapy after graduation and has been an active member and officer of the MU Pre-Physical Therapy Club.

Mohit Gupta

Mo is a junior zoology major and a Harrison Scholarship recipient. He has become expert at recording and analyzing the fights of pairs of male crickets and has been collaborating on the neurogenesis project. He, along with Josh and Nora, received a Miami University Undergraduate Research Grant Award in 2006. Mo plans to attend medical school after graduation and has a keen interest in baseball and in touring the world.
