Native Prairie Demonstration Site At Dewitt Cabin

Twenty-five species of grasses and wildflowers broadly representative of the native tall grass prairie of the Midwest were planted here in 2004.

The purpose of this site is to demonstrate that landscaping with native plants can create wildlife habitat and a visually appealing alternative to turfgrass (lawn).

Substituting native landscaping for turfgrass also reduces toxic lawnmower emissions and the use of lawn chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides and man-made fertilizers.

Water is conserved because native species are adapted to our local climate and rainfall and do not need to be watered once established.

Native prairies support a diversity of wildlife by providing food and cover.

See the links at the left for more information and photos of the prairie.
