The Ecology Research Center (ERC), located just North of Oxford was founded in 1969 as a site for ecological research and educational activities. The ERC encompasses 170 acres of old fields, woodlots, hedgerows, agricultural plots, and experimental ponds and is managed by a Director and an internal policy committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Science.
All areas of the Natural Areas have been used for research. Some of the studies include: the competitive effects of the invasive shrub, Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) , on forest herbs at Western Woods; Marcum Trail is used for soil, vegetation, surface runoff, stream flow and landform analysis; Peffer Park studies include land-use history (based on air photo analysis and field observation) vegetation analysis and soil analysis related to runoff rates and infiltration.
