Gorchov and his graduate students have been studying
the competitive effects of the invasive shrub, Amur
honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii), on forest herbs at Western
Woods for several years. They
found that this invasive shrub reduced the reproduction
of all three species of forest annuals studied (cleavers
(Galium aparine), yellow touch-me-not (Impatiens pallida),
and clearweed (Pilea pumila) (Gould and Gorchov 2000).
This shrub also reduced
growth and reproduction of the three species of perennial
herbs we studied (wild leek (Allium burdickii), yellow
violet (Viola pubescens), and rue-anemone (Thalictrum
thalictroides, previously known as Anemonella thalictroides)
(Miller and Gorchov, 2004).
