Teaching in the Natural Areas

Geography

"I use the area behind Marcum Center, Peffer Park and the ridge behind Boyd into the White Pine areas for lab excursions for Geo 121( Intro physical geography). For Geo 221 we use the restored prairie at the DeWitt cabin for vegetation analysis and comparison with the prairie in Peffer Park. We also use four sites in Peffer Park for extended vegetation and soil analysis as well as a base for developing topographic and soil map reading skills. In Geo 435/535( Land use capability analysis ) I use the flood plain along Four-Mile Creek and Harker’s Run for flood plain delineation and soil interpretation exercises. I also use the big pond area for a study of old field succession. In Geo 428/528 ( soil geography ) I use the area adjacent to both Harker’s Run and Collins Run for soil exposure studies."
