Frequently Asked Questions
Concerning Membership in the
Miami University Marching Band

1) Pre-season Week
Pre-season Week (band camp) for the MUMB is held the week immediately before school begins in August and is a requirement for membership in the band.

2) Pre-season Week Housing and Meal Plans
Student housing and meals for pre-season week for any student living in Miami University housing is provided by Miami University at a nominal cost of approximately $25 a day and is charged directly to the students bursar's account with Miami University. The Marching Band will automatically submit your housing request once you register for Pre-season Week. If you have any special circumstances (arriving early, etc.) please make sure you indicate that in your Pre-season Week registration.

3) Fees and Expenses
The MUMB is committed to making membership in the band affordable to everyone. All members are required to pay a $90 registration fee for Pre-season Week. This fee covers the cost of evening meals at band camp, the required MUMB shirt, and other expenses and can be paid during Pre-season Week. This year there will be an additional fee of $200 to help offset some of the costs of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade trip. All instrumentalists are required to provide their own white marching shoes and gloves, which are available for purchase upon registration to pre-season week ($30 for shoes and $2 for gloves). There is a $35 rental fee for anyone who will be using a university owned instument, payable during Pre-season Week. Students may be asked to help defer costs on special trips and tours.

4) MUMB Auditions
Pre-season auditions are held in December for Field Commanders, in the spring for Shakerettes (mid-March) and Twirlers (usually the last weekend in April). Playing and marching auditions for instrumentalists are held on the first day of pre-season week. Music for the auditions will be available on this website (in the Members Area). An email will be sent to all members as music is made available on the site. Specific dates for auditions are available here.

5) Trips
The travel schedule for the MUMB varies year to year depending on the conference schedule. Typically, the MUMB will make one overnight trip and one day trip during the season. Post-season travel is a possibility and members are expected to participate in any championship game or bowl game to which Miami is invited. Special trips, such as Macy's, will require some student financial support. Post-season travel does not bear a cost to students - meals, lodging, and travel are covered.

6) Instrument Rentals
Mellophones, baritones, sousaphones and percussion will be provided by the MUMB for a nominal yearly rental fee of $35. These instruments will be assigned during pre-season week. This rental fee covers normal maintenance as well as helps supply sticks and mallets. A very limited number of other instruments are also availale for rent as well.

7) Scheduling
All members of the MUMB must schedule Marching Band (MUS 100E). Although it is best to schedule Marching Band during the summer orientation scheduling sessions, band may be force added at the beginning of the school year. Marching Band is a 2 hour credit class and meets daily from 4:20 to 5:50pm. Schedule conflicts are a common occurrence with Marching Band. Most of these conflicts can be resolved during pre-season week or the first week of classes. If you have a class conflict with band as you register for classes, continue to register for pre-season week (see below) as normal and attend pre-season week. We'll handle the conflict once you arrive. The most important step in the summer is to register for pre-season week. This absolutely ensures that you will be included in our mailings and in our planning for the coming season. You may register for pre-season week here. Failure to do so runs the risk of you not being included in the membership of the band.

8) Marching Band Pre-season Week Registration
