Application Form and Fee
You may submit your application form and fee to the Graduate School as soon as you decide to apply, even if you have not yet assembled the materials listed below.

Important: In the upper left hand corner, write "MTSC" in the box for Degree, and "Technical and Scientific Communication" in the box for Program.
Undergraduate Transcript
You will need to request two official copies of your undergraduate, and graduate if applicable, transcripts to be sent directly from your institution to the Graduate School. While not required, you may also submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Anthology Test.
After the Graduate School processes your application form and transcripts, it will send them to the MTSC Director. After receiving your application materials, the MTSC Director will create a personal file into which your other materials will be placed once they arrive.

Three Letters of Recommendation
These may be from faculty in the school at which you earned your most recent degree. At least one should be from your major department, and all should speak to your qualifications for graduate study and your abilities in written and oral communication. Please have recommenders write on letterhead rather than send e-mail, and please have your letters of recommendation sent directly to the MTSC Director, rather than giving them to you for forwarding.
Two Writing Samples
These should be expository or practical communications, preferably (but not necessarily) on technical or scientific subjects. You may submit one or two additional writing samples in other formsfor instance, a newspaper articleif you feel that in doing so, you will give us a fuller appreciation of the range of your writing abilities.
If the samples you wish to submit contain proprietary information that your employer is reluctant to release, please contact the MTSC Director. Arrangements can be made to ensure the confidentiality of such materials.
Personal Statement
This statement is a very important part of your application. You may organize the statement in any way you choose; however, it must answer these questions:
- How do your undergraduate study, your work experience, and your professional goals qualify you to study in the MTSC program? It is helpful to make sure you understand our program before you respond to this question.
- Whyare you interested in the MTSC program and in the profession of technical and scientific communication?
- What type of work do you want to do after graduation? (Be as specific as possible at this time in your schooling and career.)
Application Deadline
The university application deadline for fall admission is February 1. Although the MTSC Executive Committee does accept applications for review after that date, students who submit all their required application materials by this deadline have the best chance of admission and assistantship awards.
