How to Apply

Apply to the MU Graduate School

Submit the following materials to this address:
The Graduate School
102 Roudebush Hall
Miami University
Oxford, OH 45056

Application Form and Fee

You may submit your application form and fee to the Graduate School as soon as you decide to apply, even if you have not yet assembled the materials listed below.

Important: In the upper left hand corner, write "MTSC" in the box for Degree, and "Technical and Scientific Communication" in the box for Program.

Undergraduate Transcript

You will need to request two official copies of your undergraduate, and graduate if applicable, transcripts to be sent directly from your institution to the Graduate School. While not required, you may also submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Anthology Test.

After the Graduate School processes your application form and transcripts, it will send them to the MTSC Director. After receiving your application materials, the MTSC Director will create a personal file into which your other materials will be placed once they arrive.

Apply to the MTSC Program

Submit the following materials to this address:
Dr. Jean Lutz, Director
Master’s Degree Program in Technical and Scientific Communication
Department of English
Miami University
Oxford, Ohio 45056

Three Letters of Recommendation

These may be from faculty in the school at which you earned your most recent degree. At least one should be from your major department, and all should speak to your qualifications for graduate study and your abilities in written and oral communication. Please have recommenders write on letterhead rather than send e-mail, and please have your letters of recommendation sent directly to the MTSC Director, rather than giving them to you for forwarding.

Two Writing Samples

These should be expository or practical communications, preferably (but not necessarily) on technical or scientific subjects. You may submit one or two additional writing samples in other forms—for instance, a newspaper article—if you feel that in doing so, you will give us a fuller appreciation of the range of your writing abilities.

If the samples you wish to submit contain proprietary information that your employer is reluctant to release, please contact the MTSC Director. Arrangements can be made to ensure the confidentiality of such materials.

Personal Statement

This statement is a very important part of your application. You may organize the statement in any way you choose; however, it must answer these questions:

Application Deadline

The university application deadline for fall admission is February 1. Although the MTSC Executive Committee does accept applications for review after that date, students who submit all their required application materials by this deadline have the best chance of admission and assistantship awards.

Once you have completed this process, be sure to follow up on our application materials by calling or e-mailing the graduate program associate, Debbie Morner (513) 529 7530 or mornerdl@muohio.edu
