Office of the Vice President for Information Technology/CIO

Building upon the groundwork laid over the past four years, my tenure as Interim Vice President will continue to actively leverage information technology to improve teaching, learning, research and administration, aligning with Miami's focused goals drafted by President Hodge.

In 2003, the university made an investment in information technology for the benefit of all members of the Miami community. That investment has yielded a significantly stronger and more robust infrastructure, allowing new initiatives and continuing services to enjoy a level of stability and reliability not possible before. Resources have been invested to provide a base level of technology in nearly all commonly-scheduled classrooms and develop a responsive support system to maintain those classrooms. Research computing has grown to boast the second largest academic research computing facility in the state, with a PhD level staff to provide support and consulting. Instructional design staff is available to partner with faculty in creating new teaching and learning paradigms. Smarter purchasing practices have allowed technology dollars to go much farther down to the department level. The changes are apparent at all levels of the university.

Accomplishments aside, we recognize there are many opportunities remaining for improvements: data to aid in analysis and decision making; continuing background "infrastructure" work to improve service reliability, business continuity and disaster recovery; compliance with federal and state laws and regulations; the ability to delivery targeted services based upon an individual's role at the university; convenient delivery of video to the classrooms are just a few. There are countless ways information technology can be used to enable progress toward Miami's goals. We need you as our partners to identify and bring to fruition the most critical initiatives.
