Windows 95 Setup for Use at Miami

Preloaded Windows

The Windows 95 CD is preloaded on all new machines shipped from Dell. The CD files are located at c:\windows\options\cabs. To get a Windows machine up and running, it’s only a matter of answering a few simple questions:

  • Regional Settings
Which language and country do you want to use
  • Keyboard Layout
Which country and type of keyboard
  • User Information
    Name: 3 Character Dept
    Company: Miami University
  • License Agreement
    I accept the agreement
    I don’t accept the agreement
  • Certificate of Authenticity
Enter the Product ID number as found on the Certificate
  • Provide Workgroup Name
    MUnet or uniqueid
    3 Character department
  • Reboot
  • Time Zone
  • Create System Disk
    Cancel
  • Exit Create System Disks
Type a 0 as the number of days before a reminder
    Finish
  • Add Printer Wizard
    Cancel
  • Reboot

Icons to delete

Once Windows 95 is installed there are several icons on the desktop that can be deleted:

  • Inbox
  • The Internet
  • The Microsoft Network
  • My Briefcase
  • Online Services
  • Dell Accessories
  • Dell Documents

It is suggested that you right-mouse click on the icons and choose delete from the short-cut menu. Dragging the icon to the Recycle Bin will not work for all the icons.

Networking Components

After Windows 95 is completely installed, you are ready to configure the Network.

Access Network Properties

  1. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, the double click the Network icon. Alternatively you can right-mouse click on the Network Neighborhood icon and choose Properties.

  1. Remove Client for Microsoft Networks and NetBEUI by selecting the component then click Remove.

After removing Client for Microsoft Networks, make sure the Primary Network Logon is set to Client for NetWare Networks

  2. Add TCP/IP by clicking Add, double click Protocol, then choose Microsoft and TCP/IP.

Windows should find the necessary files in the c:\windows\options\cabs folder.
  1. Reboot when prompted.

Install MUnet 4.0

The following components are installed with MUnet 4.0:

  • McAfee Virus Scan 4.0.3
  • Netscape Communicator 4.6
  • Eudora 3.05
  • MUnet — McGill 3.02 and Rapid Filer 5.1
  • Netware Client32 3.1
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0

At this time, it is recommended that you install MUnet software from the CD. Some programs, such as McAfee VirusScan will need to be upgraded after the MUnet install.

You do not need to reboot the machine until after Netware Client32 is installed.

Note: You should not install Netware Client32 from the CD unless it is the current support version.

Remove Client for Microsoft Networks and NetBEUI by selecting the component then click Remove.

After removing Client for Microsoft Networks, make sure the Primary Network Logon is set to Client for NetWare Networks

Add TCP/IP by clicking Add, double click Protocol, then choose Microsoft and TCP/IP.
