Banner and BannerWeb Unavailable May 11-15, 2006 for Banner 7 Upgrade
Banner and BannerWeb will be unavailable to students, faculty and staff from Thursday, May 11 at 7 pm until Monday, May 15 at 7 am. This outage period will allow IT Services to update the Banner system from SCT Banner 6 to Banner 7. Banner is the primary administrative software for Miami University. This upgrade will make all components of Banner Internet-accessible applications.

Services to be Funded by Student Technology Fee
Beginning this fall, watch for the introduction of a variety of new and improved services provided to students as a result of a new student technology fee. Specific planned improvements for the 06-07 year include increased Support Desk hours and a new satellite support desk in King Library. An increase in bandwidth for student use is planned as well as an increase in individual network storage space.

Update on Implementation of Altiris Total Management Suite at Miami
The deployment of Altiris Total Management Suite to all university-owned computers at Miami to gather a university-wide hardware inventory was initiated in early March 2006 (see announcement letter). Deployment efforts are on-going in many departments and divisions on the Oxford, Hamilton and Middletown campuses. IT Services continues to work closely with technology support representatives to coordinate deployment efforts.

Using Google Desktop Puts Data at Risk
While many of us use the Google search engine every day, the Information Security Office has learned of a Google function that might be better left out of your computing routine. The Google Desktop utility has been identified as an unacceptable information security risk. This utility represents a serious risk to all information contained on a computer where it is installed.

Meeting Maker 8.5 Upgrade and New Meeting Maker Data Retention Policy
IT Services will be upgrading the Meeting Maker 7.5 server to Meeting Maker 8.5 the weekend of May 19th. Meeting Maker will be unavailable from Friday, May 19th at 4:30 pm until Monday, May 22nd at 7:30 am while the upgrade occurs. Those using Meeting Maker will be notified of the upgrade via e-mail with instructions on how to install the new desktop client for Meeting Maker 8.5.

E-mail Aliases
IT Services is pleased to announce a new e-mail service, E-mail Aliases. With this new service, faculty and staff may choose to create up to six e-mail aliases. By default, your Miami e-mail address is UniqueID@muohio.edu. E-mail aliases provide additional, easy-to-use e-mail addresses that may be more intuitive than your default e-mail address.

Using myMiami Organization Sites to Aid Communication
In May 2005, a feature was added to myMiami that allows organizations, groups, departments, etc. at Miami to create “organization” sites that are similar in function to Blackboard course sites. These organization sites are typically used to aid a group with internal communication and allow organizations to post announcements, send email, and share files with organization members. To date, over 700 organization sites have been created.

Tips for Accessible Web Pages
In early March, a project team was formed to draft a web accessibility policy and roadmap for Miami web sites/systems for university approval and adoption. The nine-person team, consisting of web developers and web support staff from across the university, will be making its recommendations by the end of June 2006.

IT Services Support Services & Campus Partnerships Asks "How Are We Doing?"
Each spring, IT Services distributes a survey with questions related to awareness, use, and satisfaction with support services; the survey is sent to a random sample of students, faculty, and staff. The survey results are used in service planning and refinement efforts.
