Committee Selects TurningPoint as Miami’s Standard Audience Response (Clicker) System
IT Services is pleased to announce the selection of TurningPoint as the standard audience response (clicker) system for Miami University. A committee comprised of faculty, students, and staff evaluated several products over the past few months and TurningPoint was the preferred system by a large margin.


New Tool Available to Enhance Security of Hard Drives with Sensitive Data
Any faculty or staff member who handles sensitive data, including FERPA, GLBA, and HIPAA protected information, needs to take particular care to protect that information. If a notebook computer with sensitive data is lost, confidential information about our students, faculty, or staff may get into the wrong hands, leading to embarrassment, harassment, discrimination, or identity theft.

Requirement for Guest Accounts for Wireless Access Moved to Fall 2008
In order to preserve Miami’s network bandwidth and eliminate abuse of services, Miami is moving to a service that will require university guests be issued guest accounts by the department or division with whom they are visiting to gain wireless network access. This requirement will apply to all university guests who wish to use wireless network service (guest lecturers, vendors, conference participants, lodging guests, etc.).


New IT Services Security Engineering Group Focuses on Operational Security
To address the continually increasing threats to information security, IT Services has formed a new Security Engineering Group within Computing and Communication Services (CCS). Part of the responsibilities of the new group have been transferred from the Information Security Office, and the goal is to more closely integrate operational security functions into day-to-day networking and communications operations, as well as provide guidance on issues that impact the security of the technology infrastructure.


Getting Started with Windows Vista
Miami’s Windows Vista project team is finalizing the deployment methods for installing Vista Enterprise on university owned machines and working with technical staff to finish application testing. “Getting Started” training will be available in late summer or early fall.

New Cable TV Choices and “Opt-in” Phone Service for Residence Halls Coming for Next Fall
Responding to student requests for more choice and improved digital television signal, Housing, Dining & Guest Services and IT Services will be working together to upgrade cable television and phone services in the residence halls this summer.


New, Improved Knowledge Base Now Available Online!
IT Services is pleased to introduce IT Help, a new online technology support resource for the Miami community. Located at http://ithelp.muohio.edu, IT Help is a comprehensive online support system that merges the content and search functionality of the existing Knowledge Base with a new interface that allows you to open and track tickets (help requests).


58 Proposals Received for Student Technology Initiatives Funding
In response to a call for proposals for student technology initiatives announced in January/February (see February TechTalk article), 58 proposals were submitted with requests totaling $1.67M. The proposals submitted are posted online at www.muohio.edu/techfee in the “Call for Proposals” section.


Get a “Jumpstart” using New Capabilities in Office 2008 for the Mac
To help Miami students, faculty, and staff get a running start with the new version of Microsoft Office for the Mac, IT Services will be offering a two-hour “Office 2008 Jumpstart” workshop in April and May.
