A presentation of findings of a survey of project management usage among IT administrations at institutions of higher education. It tries to show why project management is important to organizations and explore the reasons it may not be used in academia. This session will also present an overview of why IT professionals should consider Project Management Professional (PMP) certification by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and what is entailed in obtaining certification.

Making Collaboration Count: Creating an Information Technology Strategic Plan

Information technology is recognized as a strategic resource in higher education. Establishing an institutional IT strategic plan and prioritizing resulting goals requires a high degree of collaboration. Miami University will share a four-step process they used to develop a university-wide IT strategic plan. This workshop will also include the project management tools and methods used to collaboratively create the plan and ensure involvement and acceptance.

Miami University has taken a proactive approach to protecting its network this year by the deployment of an Intrusion Protection Appliance. This device analyzes network traffic, inspecting it for computer viruses, worms and other attacks that can be propagated on the network. Network traffic carrying infections or representing attacks is terminated. Unlike previous generation devices, the IPA attempts to block nefarious network traffic before it causes a major problem. This panel will discuss the acquisition, deployment and successes achieved with this new technology, as well as solicit ideas from attendees about what is being done at their institutions.

Technology and Hospitality: A Web-based Application to Integrate Services for University Guests

Demonstration of a web-based application that allows the University to provide meals and accommodations for guests. Describes the change from an old system of paper tickets and manual accounting entries to the current version, where guests use plastic swipe cards, and accounting entries are generated automatically into FRS.

Engaging Prospects in an Interesting and Automated Dialog

The Ball State University Office of Admissions is utilizing a newly acquired tool to provide an ongoing and personalized communication process tailored to the different needs and interests of its prospective students. The product is called Vignette Dialog & Messenger and will be used to communicate with the "Search" pool of approximately 117,000 student names purchased from several sources to begin the admissions funnel.

Using Queuing Models and Statistical Simulation to Manage Workflows in a Help Desk Environment

The OIT Helpdesk was having problems trying to solve for how many agents they would need to staff at certain times of the day. By using queuing models and statistical software to simulate telephone and e-mail traffic to our help desk, we were able to answer a number of important questions. Answers came in the form of, but not limited to, scheduling, call pricing analysis, and playing "what if" analysis.

Digital Orientation to Instructional Technology Resources: New Faculty CD-ROM

Using Flash and XML, Academic Technology Services was able to create a completely personalized CD for each faculty member.
