professionals should consider Project Management Professional
(PMP) certification by the Project Management Institute (PMI)
and what is entailed in obtaining certification.
Making Collaboration Count: Creating
an Information Technology Strategic Plan
Debra Allison, Miami University
Kay H. Roman, Cornelius & Associates

process they used to develop a university-wide IT strategic plan.
This workshop will also include the project management tools and
methods used to collaboratively create the plan and ensure involvement
and acceptance.

of the eight characteristics of The New American University. Aligning
people, process and technology through strategic planning with
a focus on e-Learning will follow. The presentation will conclude
with an examination of the Students of the Future.
What to Do When People Problems Threaten
Project Success
Edwin T. Cornelius, III, Cornelius & Associates
This session presents some practical approaches
to dealing with the teamwork, leadership, and political problems
that often provide daunting challenges to project success, particularly
on large projects with many sub-teams, sponsors, and stakeholders.
Ed will give real-life examples, and then show you some organizational
development processes that have helped remove or at least mitigate
the impact of these “people” issues as barriers to
project success.

Teaching and Learning
Achieving Mobile Solutions in the Classroom
(and Medical Environment)
Robert McKenney, The Ohio State University
PDA’s and other mobile devices (e.g.,

Miami University
Lisa Santucci, Electronic Information Services Librarian, Miami
University
Jen-chien Yu, Electronic Information Services Librarian, Miami

Miami University
Tim Gruenhagen, Manager, Data Communications and Networking, Miami
University
Joe Simpson, Coordinator, Network Services, Miami University
Miami University has taken a proactive approach to protecting
its network this year by the deployment of an Intrusion Protection
Appliance. This device analyzes network traffic, inspecting it
for computer viruses, worms and other attacks that can be propagated
on the network. Network traffic carrying infections or representing
attacks is terminated. Unlike previous generation devices, the
IPA attempts to block nefarious network traffic before it causes
a major problem. This panel will discuss the acquisition, deployment
and successes achieved with this new technology, as well as solicit
ideas from attendees about what is being done at their institutions.

of approximately 117,000 student names purchased from several
sources to begin the admissions funnel.
Using Queuing Models and Statistical Simulation to Manage
Workflows in a Help Desk Environment
Todd Wulfhorst, Senior Microsystems Consultant, The
Ohio State University
The OIT Helpdesk was having problems trying to solve for how
many agents they would need to staff at certain times of the day.
By using queuing models and statistical software to simulate telephone
and e-mail traffic to our help desk, we were able to answer a
number of important questions. Answers came in the form of, but
not limited to, scheduling, call pricing analysis, and playing
"what if" analysis.
Digital Orientation to Instructional Technology Resources:
New Faculty CD-ROM
Elizabeth Chalker, AREA 351, Miami University
