back up

verb, two words  the act of doing a backup of a file(s)

backup adj or noun, one word - A copy of a file or files that has been made in case the original is destroyed.  The act of making a backup.

baud

a measure of digital communication speed that tells how many signals are transmitted per second.  In common usage, the baud rate of a modem is how many bits it can send or receive per second..  Often confused with bits per second.     See also: Bit , Modem

Binary DigIT) -- A single digit number in base-2, in other words, either a 1 or a zero. The smallest unit of computerized data. Bandwidth is usually measured in bits-per-second.        See also: Bandwidth , Bps , Byte , Kilobyte , Megabyte

Boolean operators

words used to broaden or narrow computer database searches. These include or, and, not, and near.

bpi

bits per inch  The measurement of the number of bits stored in a linear inch of a track on a recording surface, such as on a disk or tape.

bps

Bits-Per-Second -- A measurement of how fast data is moved from one place to another. Usually about ten times the number of characters (including spaces, carriage returns, etc.) that are transmitted across a data link each second.  Don’t confuse with baud    A 28.8 modem can move 28,800 bits per second.  From the Chicago Manual of Style  See also: Bandwidth , Bit.

broadband

adj.    1) High-speed transmission. The term is commonly used to refer to communications lines or services at T1 rates (1.544 Mbps) and above.

          (2) A method of transmitting data, voice and video using frequency division multiplexing (FDM), such as used with cable TV.

byte

a set of Bits that represent a single character. Usually there are 8 Bits in a Byte, sometimes more, depending on how the measurement is being made.     See also: Bit
