Deciding to Upgrade to Mac OS X

This chart will help you decide if you should upgrade to Mac OS X. Please be aware that the Mac OS X evaluation committee is recommending that users do not upgrade until the summer of 2001.

Do you have a Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor based ? (See the Hardware requirements for details) Yes
No
Does your computer have at least 256MB of physical RAM? Yes
No
Does your computer have built-in Firewire? Yes
No
Does your computer have a DVD Drive? Yes
No
Does your computer have at least 3.0 GB of available space on your hard drive; 4GB of disk space if you install XCode 2 developer tools Yes
No
Does your computer have a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer? Yes
No
Are at least half of the applications you use available natively for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger? Yes
No
Does any of your applications run under Mac OS 9.x? Yes
No
Are the drivers for any specialized hardware or peripherials available for Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger? Yes
No
Can you access all of your file server space using AppleShare/IP, AFP, FTP? (ie, no NetWare client is required) Yes
No
Do you have support resources outside of IT Services if you have problems with Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger? Yes
No
Does your local technical support staff approve upgrading to Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger? Yes
No

If you answered 'no' to any of these questions, you should not upgrade to Mac OS X at this time. As more software and drivers become available and Miami's environment and support change, you should reevaluate upgrading.
