Have you ever ...
- worked on a university-owned computer that is too old to run the latest software or is so slow that you are always frustrated with it?
- received a new University computer but had to wait weeks for someone to come to your office to install the software you need and transfer your files from the old computer to the new computer?
- needed a new software application but had to wait for someone to come to your office with a set of CDs to install it for you?
- tried to open a critically important Word document and had Word tell you the file is corrupted and then realized that you don't have a back-up?
- been frustrated that a support person couldn't see your screen while you tried to describe a problem over the phone?
- had the University Inventory Management staff come looking for a computer that you haven't had for several years?
Hopefully, you've never experienced any of these frustrations, but if you have, you’re not alone. The Life Cycle Management Project is Miami's effort to putting an end to these problems. Life Cycle Management is about reducing the total cost of ownership for computers - not just the money spent on purchasing computers and software but also the money spent on deployment, support, and disposal of computers. Integral to the approach is the implementation of the Altiris Total Management Suite. Altiris Total Management Suite provides a set of tools that automate routine computer support activities so that your computer is up and running and the software you need is installed quickly. If you do have a problem, remote assistance is just a phone call away you just have to click "Yes" to acknowledge that you want it. (Learn more about Altiris)
The IT Purchasing Process and the IT Asset Disposal are another two facets of Life Cycle Management. All facets of Life Cycle Management have the same goal: to save time and money on hardware, software, and routine desktop support so that money and time can be re-purposed for research, teaching, and just getting things done.
