Software

Whether you choose an Dell or Apple laptop, the software you need to connect to Miami's wired and wireless networks comes pre-loaded on your Miami Notebook.

  • LibreOffice provides functionality similar to Microsoft Office. While not as full featured as the commercial office prodct, LibreOffice is free and meets many of the basic needs of a student for writing papers and preparing presentations.
  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i plus AntiSpyware protects your computer from viruses and spyware, two of the leading threats to computers connected to the Internet. The software is configured to download updates weekly so your computer stays protected from new threats as they emerge.
  • Cisco AnyConnect Virtual Private Network (VPN) client establishes a secure connection to Miami's on-campus network from off-campus locations, such as your home, an off-campus apartment, or starbucks
  • Cisco Clean Access allows you to log in to Miami's network to get Internet and network services and doublechecks your computer to make sure it is protected by up-to-date Microsoft Windows operating system patches and virus protection software. (Those with Apple computers log in via a web page; Cisco Clean Access is not required.)
  • myFiles mounts network resources used by students to store and retreive coursework, to turn in assignments, to back-up important files, and to publish web-pages.
  • uPrint allows you to select a public printer in locations across campus, such as King Library, for printing and copying.
  • Miami Notebook Software Updater provides a mechanism to deliver course-specific software and to automatically repair software problems in the background -- before a real problem happens.
  • And more... popular free software utilities – like FireFox, Adobe Acrobat Reader and iTunes– are also pre-loaded to save you time and supply the tools you need to be productive, in class and out.

What about Microsoft Office?

Microsoft Office is NOT included on the Miami Notebooks.

Miami strongly recommends that all students have Microsoft Office and has negotiated an agreement with Microsoft that allows students to purchase it at a substantial discount. Students are not eligible to purchase through Miami's Microsoft Agreement until they are registered for classes so Microsoft Office is not pre-installed on the Miami Notebooks.

Once you are registered for classes, you may purchase Microsoft Office at a discounted price online. Visit www.muohio.edu/microsoft for more information and to purchase.
