Projects that we are/were involved in
Prof. Joe Johnson; Department: Psychology
Professor Joe Johnson studies how people make judgments and decisions. We have provided him with custom software tracks the time and order in which people study the characteristics of objects they need to make a decision about. The first version of the software has been used with close to 300 subjects. The second version of the computer program will start running in Spring 2008.
Prof. Lynn Olzak; Department: Psychology
Professor Lynn Olzak studies human visual contrast perception. We have provided her with software that lets her run experiments in vision. The software is custom made but incorporates code commonly used in the human vision research community.
Prof. Quinn Li; Department:Botany
Professor Quinn Li studies polyadenylation in plants, particularly in the model plant Arabidopsis. He is looking for the signals that determine the polyadenylation cleavage site. These are known for animals but not plants. We have written custom software for Professor Li that searches for all possible n-mers in databases of DNA sequences. The software runs in parallel on Miami's Redhawk cluster computer.
Prof. John Karro; Department:Computer Science and Systems Analysis
Professor John Karro performs research in bioinformatics, especially in the areas of comparative genomics, molecular evolution, and population genetics. We are currently converting a substantial body of C code to C++. The new software will be much easier to understand and use.
Prof. Laura Mandell; English Department
Professor Mandell works in the emerging field of Digital Humanities and the RCS group has supported several of her projects. The most notable project we have supported is the Poetess Archive which is a searchable collection of works from and about popular British and American poetry written between 1750 and 1900. The RCS group did the database and PHP scripting work that the Poetess Archive site is built on.
