Brotherhood and Sisterhood:

The Art and Artifacts of Greek Letter Societies at Miami University, 1833-2009

February 14 - November 8, 2009

Greek Letter Society CollageMiami University has a rich and storied Greek letter tradition.  It was the fourth university in the nation and the first west of the Appalachian Mountains to have a Greek letter social fraternity established on its campus.  Recognized for over a century as the "Mother of Fraternities," and famous for the "Miami Triad," Miami today claims Alpha chapters for four fraternities and one sorority.  Oxford is also the headquarters for four international Greek letter organizations.

In celebration of Miami's Bicentennial, this exhibit highlights the artistic and aesthetic diversity of Greek letter society traditions and lore at Miami as expressed through printed, photographic, recorded, and three dimensional objects.  These include rarely seen engravings, silver spoons, commemorative medallions, ceramic objects, and archival materials.  Miami campus landmarks such as the Beta Theta Pi campanile, the Delta Delta Delta sundial, the Phi Delta Theta campus gates and other monuments are profiled.

Co-sponsor: The Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Leadership at Miami University.  This exhibit is made possible through the generous assistance and collection loan of Mike Raymond, Miami Class of 1967.
