2008-2009 Planning Calendar for Prospective Miami-Luxembourg Students

Freshman year: If you are a freshman and already know you want to study abroad, you should begin making plans your freshman year. The most important step is to make an appointment with the “chief departmental advisor” in the department of your major (see page 10 in the Miami phone directory for the list of chief advisors). If you have not decided on a major, make appointments to see the advisors of your division or several departments that you might potentially major in. Ask when the best time will be for you to study abroad and how to plan your course work. You may find that freshman year is the right time for you to apply to study abroad – if you want to go abroad your sophomore year. Planning ahead also allows for summer jobs to earn pocket money for extra travel and souvenirs.

Sophomore year may be the best year for you to study at MUDEC, Miami’s campus in Luxembourg. Consider it! For most students it makes sense to get the general requirements out of the way during the freshman and sophomore years, and then focus on courses required for the major during their junior and senior years. MUDEC offers a number of courses that fulfill important Miami Plan requirements and general requirements, so it is a good idea to "save them up" and take them at MUDEC instead of taking them right away on the Oxford campus. Consider saving up some Miami Plan Foundation courses (such as ART 188, MUSIC 189, FRENCH 202, GERMAN 321 and 322) and your Thematic Sequence to take at MUDEC. Many of our students do satisfy the Thematic Sequence requirements while at MUDEC because it is so convenient.

Junior year is the time when the majority of Miami students study abroad, but the timing is up to you. It is a question of what works best for you. Many students can fulfill courses for their majors and minors while at MUDEC, including Business majors. Business majors can also complete an interdisciplinary Business-focused Thematic Sequence at MUDEC, a great opportunity. All students can do an independent study at MUDEC if they need a course in their major and we do not offer one.

Seniors and 5th year seniors also study at MUDEC and find the experience just as enriching, if not more so. The timing depends entirely on what works out best for you.
