Student Life

Professor Ambassodor Guy de Muyser and his political science class

“Amazing” is the word students use to describe student life on the Luxembourg program. The excitement of living, studying and traveling in Europe already begins on the flight over. Experiencing it all together with a once-in-a lifetime grouping of students, faculty and staff, who together create once-in-a-lifetime memories, makes our campus a very close-knit and caring community.

Students often arrive knowing no other students in the program. They quickly make many new friends and know everyone, and their friendships tend to last a lifetime. Our alumni tell us that the MUDEC experience was the best year or semester of their college years, and changed them forever – in the best possible ways. “You’ll never be the same” is their motto. MUDEC’s close-knit campus is a community within a larger welcoming Luxembourg community. Our Student Activities Coordinator is there to promote student involvement with Luxembourg cultural, sports and community groups, as well as to organize parties, holiday events, and a formal dinner /ball at the end of each semester. Students are active in the arts, volunteerism, and sports. Students even get involved with RTL, the radio and communications giant, and participate on the radio airwaves.

On campus we find that our students enjoy spending time together, relaxing in the spacious and comfortable student lounge area in the Château, known as the “cave,” (pronounced as a French word: c-ah-v). It has plenty of overstuffed chairs, a big-screen TV and VCR, a large collection of American movies on video, a kitchen with numerous microwaves and refrigerators, telephones for incoming and outgoing calls, lockers, washers and driers. The beautiful park grounds are perfect for sports activities and lots of good times.

There are numerous restaurants, cafés, shops, supermarkets, the post office, etc. within a few minutes of the Château. Luxembourg City, of course, offers much more in the way of cafés and shops, in addition to cultural events of all kinds.

Our campus boasts very close ties, great hospitality, and much interaction between the students, faculty, and staff. Our Ohio-based faculty and their families as well as the Executive Director and his wife live on our campus grounds, in the Château and villa, and are eager to share European experiences, knowledge, and insights with the students over meals, at get-togethers, while traveling, etc.

For faculty, staff, and students alike, sharing the thrill of the MUDEC experience is priceless.

One of the three pillars of our program has always been placing our students with local families, so that they can actually live with Europeans, experience European life from the inside out, and become immersed in the culture. The students are paying guests in the host families’ homes. Over the years, many life-long friendships have been formed between our host families and students, and many trips have been taken both ways across the Atlantic to attend family weddings and renew those precious ties. Many of our families have been hosting students for a very long time. For more information about housing, click here.

Prospective students and their families as well as alumni are most welcome to visit the campus. We’d love for you to see our beautiful 15th century castle and grounds and experience first-hand the charm and beauty of Luxembourg—as well as the cordiality of our staff and faculty.
