Miami University
Miami University Luxembourg

Poster of Grand Duchy of LuxembourgApplicants often have many questions about the campus and application process. Here are the questions most frequently asked by prospective students.

Q: How many students participate?
A: 125-130 students per semester, sophomores, juniors, and seniors from all majors; non- Miami students are most welcome to apply. The size of our program allows our experienced faculty and staff to interact with the students far more than on most university campuses in the US and give personal attention to each student who might need it.

Q: Which terms?

  • Fall Semester: late August - mid December

  • Spring Semester: January – early May

  • Full Year: both semesters above

  • Summer Workshop: we now offer our own 7-week summer program.

three young men in southern EuropeQ: Location?
A: Luxembourg, a Grand Duchy and the smallest nation in the European Union, is located in the heart of Western Europe, between France, Belgium and Germany. Our campus is in Differdange, Luxembourg’s 3rd largest city, in the southwest part of the country, in a 16th century castle with modern facilities and beautiful park grounds.

Q: Housing?
A: Our students are housed with carefully selected European host families in Luxembourg City, the Differdange area or nearby towns. All our families are evaluated by students each year. Special requests regarding allergies, location, living singly or with friends, etc. are received by our full-time Housing Coordinator, who fulfills as many requests as possible. Nearly all rooms are singles; a number of families like to house several students. Host families include couples and individual host parents with or without children. Living with host families enables students to become immersed in the culture, to experience Europe in an “authentic” way. Many of our host families have been with the program for a long time.

Q: What is the estimated cost for Ohio residents?
Fees, tuition, room and board are the same as on the Miami’s campus in Oxford. We estimate that the average student spends an additional $3500-$4000 per semester for travel expenses while in Europe. Please see the itemized cost sheet. To help defray the students' extra travel expenses, there are excellent scholarships available especially for the Luxembourg campus and for study abroad in general.

Q: Is there an application fee?
A: There is a non-refundable application fee of $25. Upon acceptance, a $100 deposit is needed to secure your spot.

Q: What financial aid is available?
A: Miami University scholarships and financial aid apply to study on the Luxembourg campus as well—with rare exceptions. There are general MU scholarships, special study abroad scholarships, numerous special scholarships earmarked for the Luxembourg campus, and loans. See the financial aid web page. Non-Miami students should contact financial assistance officers at their home institutions -- those who are enrolled in Ohio state colleges or state universities are part of the Ohio Consortium, which allows them to transfer their financial aid to this Miami program.

Q: Are the courses taught in English?
A: Yes, all courses are taught in English except, of course, French and German.

Q: What is the refund policy?
A: The $100 deposit is refundable until April 15 for regular decision option and March 15 for early decision option.

Q: Meals?
A: The meal plan includes a continental breakfast 7 days per week at the host family’s, and a complete hot dinner with generous portions and salad bar 4 days per week at noon, Monday through Thursday, in the castle. Additional meals are the responsibility of the individual. Most students go to a nearby supermarket for the delectable local breads, cheeses, yogurts, & fresh fruits for inexpensive meals; they also get frozen items there. We have plenty of microwaves and refrigerators in the student lounge. Nearby restaurants offering Luxembourg, Italian and Chinese fare are also very popular with the students and staff. Luxembourg's cuisine is superb!

A: The minimum standards of eligibility for enrollment are described here. Meeting these standards does not guarantee admission to MUDEC:

  • Student Status - To be eligible the individual must have been enrolled as a full-time student at Miami University (or another accredited US college or university) for at least 2 semesters and have achieved sophomore class standing prior to attending MUDEC.
  • Grades - To be eligible for enrollment in MUDEC, a student must, at the time of application and thereafter, have a cumulative grade point average (g.p.a.) of 2.5 or better. Failure to maintain a cumulative g.p.a. of 2.5 or better may result in revocation of admission.
  • Disciplinary History - The disciplinary history of each student will be reviewed by the Luxembourg Coordinator to determine admissibility. While most minor offenses do not affect admission, the consent of the Dean of the Luxembourg Campus or designee is required to admit any  student* who is on disciplinary probation or within the 12 months preceding application has:
    • Been found responsible for violating Code 1 of the Code of Student Conduct  (other than  a single violation of Section 2.105.B);
    • Been convicted of any criminal offense; or
    • Any pending University disciplinary or criminal charges.
    • *For students enrolled at institutions other than Miami University , these requirements will be applied and adapted as necessary to the applicable student conduct rules of any college or university in which the student is in attendance.

A STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN ELIGIBILITY FOLLOWING APPLICATION AND ACCEPTANCE.  FAILURE TO MAINTAIN ELIGIBILITY WILL RESULT IN REVOCATION OF ADMISSION.

MUDEC SELECTIVE ADMISSIONS:  When the number of applications from students eligible for admission exceeds the number of available openings, the following criteria will be used in descending order of importance to admit students.

  • Strength of academic performance (including grades and rigor of program)
  • Prior disciplinary/ criminal history [including seriousness of violation(s) and evidence of good behavior since the violation]
  • Quality of essay
  • Strength of letters of reference

Q: When should I apply?
A: We encourage all applicants (fall semester, spring semester, and full-year applicants alike) to apply during the fall semester of the academic year preceding the academic year they would like to attend MUDEC. That gives the students ample time to familiarize themselves with MUDEC’s course offerings and make appointments with their chief departmental advisors to discuss them.

The deadlines for all applicants are the following:

        • The first-round deadline for completed applications is January 24.
        • The second-round deadline is March 1.
        • At that point we have rolling admissions for any open spots until all are filled

Q: When do I find out if I have been accepted?
A: We send out acceptance letters in the first week of March. Later applicants are informed on an individual basis as soon as possible.

4 male students in front of notre dameQ: What opportunities are there for campus-sponsored and independent travel?
A: Travel is at its best when it brings to life what you are studying. So all courses are designed to take full advantage of Luxembourg’s proximity to many European countries. Its central location makes the weeklong faculty-guided field study tour an integral part of the course work. It may take you to places such as London, Paris, Prague, Berlin, Switzerland, Salzburg, Vienna and Italy to discover the great cultural, political and economic centers of Europe. There are also 2 days of staff- and faculty-guided orientation tours in the Grand Duchy and to Trier in Germany, the 2000 year-old former capital of the Western Roman Empire. Weekends and vacations offer ample opportunity for independent travel.

Q: Is there an orientation program?
A: Yes. There are 5-7 mandatory orientation sessions in Oxford, which are available on DVDs for those who cannot attend all of them. On-site in Luxembourg there are two days of orientation sessions at the Château, including a walking tour of Differdange, followed by staff- and faculty-guided travel in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to acquaint the students with the country. Generally an additional guided tour takes the group over the border to Trier, Germany’s oldest city, once the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Our Student Activities Coordinator in the Château, a MUDEC alumnus/alumna and staff member, is happy to be of assistance throughout the semester.

Q: How can I get an application form?
