Financial Aid and Scholarships for Luxembourg

The Miami Luxembourg Program is very affordable and an outstanding educational value: the basic costs are the same as on the main campus in Oxford. Fees, tuition, room and board are almost identical on the two campuses. Miami students can apply Miami University scholarships, federal and state aid to the Luxembourg campus. In addition there are a number of scholarships for the Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg.

Miami's Office of Student Financial Assistance has extensive information on its web site for the following:

FAFSA:

For most Luxembourg scholarships and many general Miami scholarships and forms of financial aid, Miami students must apply for assistance annually by completing a federal aid form: the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The entire process can be done online (www.fafsa.ed.gov/) or you can pick up a paper FAFSA in the Office of Student Financial Assistance in 121 CAB (529-8734) beginning in early December. You will receive confirmation of your application immediately if completed on-line or approximately 4-6 weeks after filing a paper FAFSA.

Deadline: March 15.
Please note that early applicants reap the most benefits! Submit the FAFSA to the federal processor in Washington DC by this deadline.

MU scholarships:

The following web page explains Miami's policies for awarding scholarships: http://www.units.muohio.edu/sfa/scholar/policies.htm . Returning Student Scholarship Applications are available in the Office of Student Financial Assistance (121 CAB) beginning in November, and the completed applications are due back in that office by January 31.

Deadline: Jan. 31. Return those applications to 121 CAB.

Even if you intend to apply only for university-wide merit-based scholarships, it is recommended that you file FAFSA in addition to filling out the appropriate scholarship forms.

Non-Miami students

Those who are Ohio residents will receive ORS and OLS scholarships. For other aid they should consult their university’s financial aid and study abroad offices. Here is a new development that you may not be aware of: Students who attend public universities in Ohio can apply scholarships from their home institutions as well as federal financial aid to Miami in Luxembourg under the Ohio Consortium Agreement. See your university's Study Abroad Office to find out more about this great opportunity.

Outside scholarships

for study abroad also exist. One excellent source of support is the Gilman scholarship for students receiving Pell Grants.

Scholarships designated for the Luxembourg campus:

Most Luxembourg scholarships require no separate application. Just file FAFSA. View a list of scholarships currently offered through our office.

A few Luxembourg scholarships do require an additional step. For Luxembourg merit-based scholarships, simply check the appropriate box on the application form for admission to the program.

The Don and Susan Kasle Luxembourg scholarship is for students who might otherwise fall through the cracks: those students who show merit and have financial need, but the FAFSA indicates no need. Please contact our office for a separate form to apply for this scholarship.

There is also a separate application form for the Félix Chomé scholarship which is intended for students who demonstrate academic merit and a high level of financial need.

Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and some companies, the Miami University Dolibois European Center is able to offer scholarship assistance to a number of qualified Miami students. Through the university, other departmental and general scholarships are also available. In some cases MUDEC recommends students specifically for those scholarships. Most of the scholarships awarded by MUDEC are based on both merit and documented need.

Students hoping to receive scholarship assistance must meet the general criteria for admission including a good conduct record verified by the Office of Ethics and Conflict Resolution. Awards are usually not given to students with code 1 conduct violations or multiple violations.

Luxembourg Scholarship amounts:

We realize that it is helpful to know the range of MUDEC stipends in order to make plans. Because the exact amounts in a given year depend on the number of donations received, the interest earned, and the number of students requesting assistance, we can only provide a rough idea of the possible range. Recently amounts have varied greatly. Last year scholarships averaged about $1750, but some students received significantly larger scholarships. Usually we are able to assist many of the students with documented financial need. We take into account a student's G.P.A., information supplied on the application form, university conduct record, essay, and letters of reference.
