Most Recent Updates:

July 1, 2008: We need to change the deadlines and update the prices of our main events. All changes are noted here. Please reserve the individual events and pay for them in dollars by September 19th so that we can fill the remaining spots at that time with MUDEC's friends in the Luxembourg community.

Please note which events require registration and what the registration deadlines are. When you register for the 40th anniversary celebrations with Fanny Blaise (blaisef@muohio.edu), please specify the events you plan to attend--particularly if they require registration.

To pay for the events: Please send a check made out (in dollars) to "MUDEC Activities Account" to the Luxembourg Office, MacMillan Hall, Miami University, Oxford, OH 45056. The cost of each item has been updated below and is given in dollars as well as euros.

Tuesday, October 14th: Formal Dinner at the château for faculty, staff, spouses, “registered” visitors from the States and friends of MUDEC.  The cost is 40.00 ($60.00) per person -- space limitations make it impossible for “drop-ins” to be accommodated. Advance registration  is required. No exceptions can be made. The number of place settings will equal the number of registered guests.

Wednesday, October 15th: Séance Académique at the Athenée in Luxembourg. This formal event is open to everyone and free of charge – no registration is necessary. The first rows are reserved for dignitaries in attendance.

Thursday, October 16th: Concert held at the multi-purpose hall in Differdange. Open to all and free of charge. No registration necessary.

Friday afternoon, October 17th: Reception at the American Embassy, Luxembourg. For security reasons, all participating guests must register for this event. No exceptions can be made. The cost is 15.00 ($23.00). Registrations on a first come–first served basis.

Friday evening, October 17th: Formal dinner and dance. While we had thought that a boat cruise on the Marie Astrid would be a good venue, we are moving more in the direction of a formal dinner and dance event in one of the large hotels in Luxembourg. Registration for this formal event is necessary. The number of place setting will equal the number of registered guests. Open to all: students, faculty, staff, spouses, visitors from the States and local friends.  The cost will be 60.00 € ($96). We are not sure about the cost of transportation to the various events, so the total figure is an estimate at this point: a total of 150 for Tuesday’s dinner, the Embassy reception, the formal dinner dance, and a cushion for transportation costs.

June 12, 2008 -- Dr. Teckman has scrapped his original tour plans. He presents his new plans here:

Dear Friends and Alumni of MUDEC:

You are receiving this message because you indicated an interest in attending the 40th Anniversary of MUDEC in October 2008. You earlier received an e-mail from the Alumni Office showing a tour program that included days in Luxembourg, Brugge, and Amsterdam, but this program did not interest many people. There were many reasons including: high airfares, low dollar purchasing power, high price, and too long an itinerary. This earlier tour plan has been cancelled.

Please look at the attached revised plan which is shorter, cheaper, and focused on Luxembourg, with some free time for independent activity. We will still use the comfort of Hilton hotels in Luxembourg and Mainz.  It is also possible to arrange your own airfare and join our group in Luxembourg for the land tour only.  However, we must have about 25 or more persons on the tour to cover overhead expenses, especially if some of you wish to join the group in Luxembourg for just two or three days.

Please contact me or Cordelia Stroinigg if you wish to join us.  Ekkie Stiller, President Hodge, and I are hoping to put a Miami/MUDEC alumni group together in the manner of groups in the past who celebrated the 20th, 25th, 30th, and 35th year celebrations.

Plans for the 40th Anniversary Celebrations

Dear MUDEC / MUEC Alumni,

We have received many excited queries about plans for the MU(D)EC 40th Anniversary Celebrations. Thank you so very much for the great response!

Each evening a key event will be planned by MUDEC for you:
Tuesday: Formal Dinner
Wednesday: Séance Académique
Thursday: Concert
Friday afternoon: Reception at the American Embassy, Luxembourg Dinner
Friday evening: Formal dinner and dancing (either in a hotel or perhaps on a cruise on the Marie Astrid passenger ship on the Moselle River. See photo below.)

All aboard, summer cruises

Regarding some questions you have posed:

Several of you have asked if the evening events are suitable for small children. Not really. Babysitting will not be provided.

During the daytime you can visit classes at the Château , and you can reacquaint yourselves with Luxembourg on your own or with the alumni and friends of MUDEC you meet at the events. I feel sure that if you come by yourself, there will be many people in your shoes who want to get together to do some sightseeing in Lux City and the region.

Other daytime options:  Dr. Charles Teckman, former Director of MUDEC, is organizing a travel package that offers numerous options.  You can register for the entire package (flight to Europe, hotels, daytime tours in Lux, and additional travel after the Anniversary Celebrations with more guided tours) or you can participate in whichever parts of the package interest you – such as just the flight, or just certain guided tours in Luxembourg. During the 4 days of the Anniversary Celebrations, daytime guided tours will be planned by Dr. Teckman for his group and whoever wants to join in.  The daytime tours will include a guided tour of Luxembourg City to see the 1000-year-old fortress and other interesting sights plus an afternoon drive through the vineyards of southern Luxembourg. There will be a daytime trip to Trier, the oldest city in Germany, for a guided tour of its Roman heritage and lunch in the charming town of Bernkastel, Germany on the Mosel le River. Another daytime trip will be to northern Luxembourg to visit Vianden Château  (now fully and beautifully rebuilt) and to Diekirch to visit the Battle of the Bulge Museum. Following the four nights in Luxembourg during the 40th Anniversary Celebrations, there will be two nights in Bruges/Brügge, 2 nights in Normandy, and 2 nights in Paris with guided tours in each of these lovely locations.

If you are interested in taking Dr. Teckman’s 10-day tour, he is eagerly waiting to hear from you at teckmac@muohio.edu .   The full plan will evolve on his web site and he expects to have more details soon: (www.teckmanenterprises.com) He has been to Europe 122 times and knows many wonderful places to take you!

If you would like to make plans on your own, we will be happy to send you or email you the list of hotels that we recommend to parents and other visitors.

When you are ready to make it official that you will attend the 40th Anniversary Celebrations, please register by contacting Fanny Blaise at the Château: blaisef@muohio.edu

We hope to see you there!
Best wishes from all of us in the Luxembourg Office,
