Frequently Asked Questions:
Accepted Students
Our accepted students (and their parents) often ask these questions:
Q:
Is there an orientation program?
A: Before you travel to Europe, there are 2-3 mandatory orientation meetings in Oxford, Ohio. Different speakers
will acquaint you with the nature of the program and a variety
of opportunities and options. They will also offer practical
suggestions regarding finances, packing, travel, and safety.
At one of the sessions an orientation packet containing academic
forms and a host of information will be handed out. Please
plan to attend all the sessions.

Fall
'05 orientation |
On
arrival in Luxembourg, there are 2 more days of orientation
at the Château to acquaint you with additional aspects
of the program and the local area, followed by group
travel throughout Luxembourg. Generally, all the students also explore
Trier, Germany as part of orientation as well. Non-Miami students can purchase DVDs of
the Oxford orientations and stay in touch with the Oxford
Luxembourg Office by email and phone. For details please see
the MUDEC Orientation page |
| Q:
How do I find out which classes are offered?
A: The MUDEC Academic Bulletin provides that information.
It is available in our office and on our web site. It contains
a list of our courses, course descriptions, MUDEC requirements,
and opportunities to fulfill Miami Plan requirements while
you are on the Luxembourg campus, plus special information
regarding independent studies, Honors students, Business students,
etc.

Q:
How do I register for MUDEC courses?
A: Whether you are a Miami or non-Miami student, you register
on-line on Bannerweb
for your MUDEC classes.
|
| |
Q:
How do I register for the next semester while I am in Luxembourg?
A: Miami students use the Banner system to register on-line
from Luxembourg for the following semester's classes. Non-Miami
students should inquire at their home university how to register
while in Europe. All students should plan ahead! Before leaving
for Europe, they need to map out their course schedules for
the following semester. |

Q:
Can I take a class in my Miami Plan Thematic Sequence for
credit/no credit?
A: Yes, you can. You are allowed to take one course at MUDEC
on a credit/no credit basis, and that course can be part of
your Thematic Sequence. Just be sure that it is not a base
course or a class that is supposed to count toward requirements
in your major or minor. Usually those courses cannot be taken
credit/no credit. Non-Miami students, please note that the
Thematic Sequence is not a requirement

Q:
What should I pack? How much money do I take? How do I get
to Europe, and so on?
A: The Suggestion Booklet (or "Green Book") contains
pactical information and checklists for planning, packing,
financial information, travel, arrival in Luxembourg, and
much more. A copy will be placed in your orientation packet;
it is also available on our web site: "Suggestion

Q:
What is the best way to get to Luxembourg?
A: So long as you arrive in Luxembourg on the day specified
in the orientation materials, you are free to decide how you
want to get there. The local travel agent in Oxford, Ohio
offers one or more group flights, which are met in Europe
by MUDEC representatives and taken by bus to the MUDEC. This
is a popular option, but no one is obligated to travel with
those groups. You also have the option to fly separately,
but meet one of the charter buses at the designated airport.
If you arrive independently, you must make your own way to
your host family's house and contact the host family in advance
to iron out the details.

Q:
How do I travel around when in Europe?
A: The train system in Europe is excellent and a fulfilling way to travel. Most students
travel a good deal by train. Today budget airlines such as ryanair have also become very popular with our students -- so popular, in fact, that a small number of students now feel it is unnecessary to purchase any Eurail pass. The majority, however, combine air and rail travel and do purchase a Eurail pass. For short trips, individual round-trip tickets
are usually the best value. For long trips, the students generally
use a 2nd class Youth Eurail Flexi Pass. See the Eurail web
site at www.raileurope.com.
The best train passe, according to our students, are
Eurail Youth Flexipasses good for any 10 within a 2-month
period. Most students purchase just one and learn how to make
them stretch over the semester. There are many kinds of Eurail
passes to choose from, other types of train passes as well,
and there are always special deals for train tickets and flights. Our recent alumni recommend the 10-day Eurailpass (but no longer feel that the 15-day pass is a good investment for MUDEC students), since they will also fly some weekends.
