MORE MUDEC NEWS
from Katy Conrad, Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs and French double major, who is graduating this month: “I thought I would let you know that after three excruciatingly painful phone interviews, I have been offered the position in Muscat, Oman with AIESEC. It looks like I will be relocating there at the very beginning of January for at least 18 months! I know it wouldn't have been possible to get this position without having had the study abroad and work-related experiences in Luxembourg! My semesters at MUDEC will always be a shining star on my CV and I'm sure my experiences there will play a vital role in my future endeavors!” |

Eric Goodman
Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing and MUDEC Professor, 2006-07: “MUDEC is THE place where Miami students learn about the world. When I see my former MUDEC students now that we’re all back in Oxford (where I’m the faculty advisor to the Lux Club), I’m struck by how many students tell me MUDEC was the best part of their Miami experience, and by how much they wish they were still there. I believe them, because I know it’s true.”

Susan Morgan
Distinguished Professor of English and MUDEC Professor, 2006-07: "One of the best semesters our students have occurs not in Oxford but at Miami’s campus in Luxembourg, in the center of Western Europe. Offering amazing experiences outside and inside the classroom, MUDEC is a college opportunity that no one should miss. My students and I treasure the memories of our time there." |

Edward Tomarken, Professor of English

Especially of Interest to Prospective Faculty
 Jonathan Levy
Associate Professor, Department of Geology
Chair of the MUDEC Subcommittee of the International Education Committee
I was a base-course professor at MUDEC during academic years 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 teaching courses on Europe and the Environment, European water issues and Environmental Geology with a European slant. Since returning to Oxford, I have been Chair of the MUDEC Subcommittee of the International Education Committee. This subcommittee is advisory to the Provost and the Dean of MUDEC, dealing mainly with curricular issues. Its principal duty it to review and recommend appointments of Ohio-based faculty to MUDEC for visiting professors, base-courses professors and professors for the new MUDEC summer program, in all, seven to ten appointments per year.
I serve as chair of the subcommittee, not because of any particular European expertise, but because I am such a big fan of the MUDEC programs. I feel MUDEC is a gem for Miami. Living and teaching in Luxembourg was a great experience for me and my family (my spouse and two children, ages 3 and 5 when we moved to Differdange). The MUDEC students are energized and engaged. The sharing of time, space, meals and experience with the students allows a MUDEC professor to develop strong relationships with the students. The study tours, which are now a part of both base-courses and visiting-professor courses, represent an invaluable contribution both to the academic experience and to enhancing the relations between students and between students and the professor. I consider my time at MUDEC to be the most rewarding teaching I have been part of in my 13.5 years at Miami. |

Field Study Tour Insights Orientation Insights
Deanna Cozzi, '05-06, Exercise Science major, "One of my favorite weeks of the semester was the Field Study Tour. It was so neat to take what we have learned in class and see how it applies to everyday life in a different country. To have different cities be your classroom for a week is a pretty great way to learn and really opens your eyes to different customs around the world."

Hannah Goehring, ’06-07, Communication major: “My favorite part of the Luxembourg program was the field study tour for my ‘Islam in Europe’ base course. Our class spent the week in Spain and traveled by bus through its cities and olive grove countryside; all the way from Madrid down to Granada. I loved the field study tour because I was able to see and experience the places and things we had read or discussed in class! My favorite part of the trip was the experience of praying in a mosque in Granada. We were invited by the Muslim believers to pray with them during one of their most sacred holidays, Ramadan. The girls in our class were able to experience the ritual washing and clothing before the prayer. We were covered from head to toe and wore headscarves in order to be respectful of the Muslim believers and the sacred mosque. This was definitely something I had never experienced before. Wearing a headscarf was an enlightening experience because when I put it on, I was doing it out of respect for the Muslim faith. Some people may think that wearing the headscarf was a negative thing for me to do but it made me feel closer to the Muslim woman and help me understand that they do it not only out of obedience but also a deep respect for their faith and their god. Being of a different faith, it was a priceless experience! I felt so openly accepted and welcomed by those in a religion very few Americans understand or experience.” |
Orientation
by Katrina LeMense, fall ’06, English /Creative Writing major: “I enjoyed the orientation at MUDEC very much. When we first got to Luxembourg, we were thrown right into the culture, which was both intimidating and nerve racking, however the three days of orientation helped me adjust wonderfully. We rode buses all over the country and even into Germany and parts of Belgium. We got to see what country life was like in addition to the big city of Luxembourg. I saw historic graves and World War II sights that I normally would not have seen on my own. The orientation was a special and helpful introduction for us Americans as we first stepped out of our comfort zones and into a foreign place. It gave us a good sense of direction and cultural knowledge. “ |

Torey Corrado, MUDEC ’06-07, Communication major: “My semester at MUDEC allowed me to be truly immersed in European culture. I met locals, improved in my language skills, and participated in the daily activities of Europeans. I am not sure of my plans for life after graduation. I do know, however, that I can't imagine entering the real world not having had this experience. I feel that I will be more successful because of the time I spent abroad.” |
|
Amy Schumacher, MUDEC Summer ’07, Communication major: "I have had many amazing opportunities in my short time here at Miami, but the one that clearly stands out from the rest is the summer I spent in Europe through the MUDEC Program. Between living with an amazing host family, studying in the gorgeous chateau, being able to accessibly explore much of Europe, and making unforgettable memories, my time in Luxembourg was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As someone who has always been interested in other cultures, spending the summer experiencing how others live was incredible and taught me a lot about myself and my own culture as well. I will never forget my time inLuxembourg and the countless ways I have and will continue to benefit from it." |

Austin Young: MUDEC Fall 2007, Marketing major: "The study abroad experience in Luxembourg has been the most fun, exciting, and enriching semester of my life, one in which I have grown and matured immensely. There are not many times in your life that you get to study in a castle, travel to a different European country each weekend, and make lifelong friends. It has been an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life, and I hope other students take the opportunity to study here as well." |
