register for summer courses online through MyMiami. See the calendar tab above
for registration dates.

Continuing students can register for courses beginning 9 a.m. March 16 through the third day of each summer term. After that, the signatures of the instructor and the department chair are required to add a course.

Note: Oxford students who desire summer housing should make a reservation through Student Housing Services at 513.529.500. See the tab above "Living on the Oxford Campus" for housing fees.

Workshop Students

No formal admission to Miami is required if you are taking only summer credit workshops.

How to Register for a Credit Workshop
1. Find your workshop: Go online to www.muohio.edu/LLL/credit to see the complete updated list of workshop offerings.

2. Request registration in one of two ways:

  • You can request registration online (up to 10 days before the workshop begins) at www.muohio.edu/workshops. Within one business day your request will be processed.
You can view your schedule and bill online at http://mymiami.muohio.edu.

If you find that you must cancel your workshop registration, you must do so by 4:30 p.m. on the business day prior to the workshop to receive a refund.

.
New and Former Students

If you are new to Miami, you must apply for admission before registering for courses. If you are a former student at any of Miami’s campuses, you must apply for readmission. See the "Admission" tab near the top of this page for more information.

You can register for classes once you have been accepted for admission, paid requested deposits, and met the health requirements. Please do not attempt registration until you have confirmed that your admission is complete. New students at Hamilton, Middletown, and Voice of America will receive information on assessment and advising/registration
programs. See the calendar tab above for deadlines.

Senior Citizen Registration

Senior citizens (ages 60 and older) who are residents of Ohio are welcome to audit any credit course at no charge. (Summer workshops are not included.)

Formal admission and registration are not required — only the permission of the instructor.

At the regional campuses, you must complete a senior citizen audit form, available at the Miami Middletown and Miami Hamilton Offices of Records and Registration.

Registration specifics...

(all courses and workshops are enrollment contingent)

Maximum Registration

To be a full-time summer student, you must register for at least 12 hours throughout the summer terms.

To take more than eight hours in one term or more than 12 hours in overlapping terms, you must have permission of your divisional dean and submit an excess-hours permit at the registration office on your campus before you register.

Graduate students registering exclusively for thesis, dissertation, or independent study hours for summer have permission to register for 6-12 hours in Summer Term I without benefit of a petition for excess hours.

Credit / No-Credit
Remember that no more than 25 percent of the credit hours earned at Miami may be on this basis. In
addition, change of status from grade to credit/no-credit or from credit/no-credit to grade is not permitted after 20 percent of the term. Permission of the instructor is required in any course that is not a Miami Plan Foundation course.
Audit Registration
To enroll in a course on an audit basis, you must submit a Change of Schedule form with written
permission of the instructor. A class taken for audit is charged at the same rate as a credit course or workshop. You can change your audit status during the first 60 percent of the course.
Independent Studies and Restricted Courses
You may not register through MyMiami for any course that a department has restricted, such as an
independent study or special seminar. Obtain a form from the academic department offering the course.
Senior Permission
Seniors may elect to earn either undergraduate or graduate credit in 500- and 600-level courses. Students must meet specific requirements and have approval of the course instructor, academic adviser, and dean of the Graduate School. Application forms are available at the Graduate School. Course numbers 700 and above are restricted to graduate students.
Dropping a Course/Canceling a Workshop

Students must officially drop each unwanted course.

Nonattendance or ceasing attendance does not void financial responsibility or a grade of F.

Drops can be made on BannerWeb via MyMiami through the third day of each summer term; after that you must submit the proper form, with the signature of your instructor or department designee, to your registration office. See tab "fees and expenses" for refund policies.

Withdrawals are posted on the academic record. The date you officially withdraw determines your refund. Failure to withdraw can result in the assignment of a grade of F and full assessment of tuition and fees.

Workshop administrative fees are non-refundable unless workshop is cancelled by Miami University

If you are a degree-seeking student continuing your studies at Miami from the spring semester, you may simply register for classes; see the registration tab above for more information.

If, however, you are new to Miami, are taking spring semester courses as a non-degree-seeking student, or are a former student at any of Miami’s campuses, you must apply for admission or re-enrollment, using the instructions below for your particular student status.

Exceptions are workshop-only participants and senior citizens wishing to audit a course. See the registration tab above for more information.

First-time Freshmen

Oxford Campus
Admission to the Oxford campus is limited and selective; applications for summer were due postmarked Feb. 1.

Regional Campuses
Hamilton and Middletown are open-admission campuses for first-time college students. If you have a high school diploma or its equivalent (G.E.D.) and can commute to either campus, you can be admitted as a freshman. The nonrefundable application fee is $35. ACT/SAT scores are required if you are currently a high school student or recent high school graduate.

Transfer Students

If you have attended another college or university and you wish to attend Miami University as a degree candidate, you must apply for admission as a transfer student. Official transcripts must be sent from all other colleges or universities you have attended. All students who have graduated from high school after 1985 must have an official, final high school transcript sent.
Request that all transcripts be sent directly to the admission office of the campus you wish to attend. They should be submitted as soon as possible since an admission decision cannot be made until they are received. You must have a cumulative g.p.a. of at least 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale), including courses that have been repeated. Typically, a 2.75 g.p.a. or better is required for admission to the Oxford campus.

Oxford Campus
Transfer admission to the Oxford campus is limited and selective. Scores on the ACT or SAT are required, unless you have been out of high school for more than five years or have at least 30 semester hours of transfer course work. Applications must be postmarked by May 1.

Regional Campuses
The Hamilton and Middletown campuses accept transfer students who have a g.p.a. of 2.00 or higher, or who have been out of school two or more years.

Former Students

Anytime you officially withdraw from the university for whatever reason, or if you have not attended for a semester or longer (excluding the summer term), you must apply for re-enrollment. Complete the re-enrollment application at www.muohio.edu/registrar/student (scroll to the bottom of the page and select How to re-enroll at Miami). Questions regarding re-enrollment should be directed to the registrar/records and registration office at the campus at which you intend to re-enroll. Former students who wish to attend the Voice of America Learning Center should re-enroll through either the Hamilton or Middletown campuses.

Oxford Campus: Office of the Registrar, 102 Campus Avenue Building, 513-529-8703

Hamilton Campus: Office of Records and Registration, 108 Mosler Hall, 513-785-3202

Middletown Campus: Office of Records and Registration, 114H Johnston Hall, 513-727-3217

Non-Degree Students

Non-degree students are enrolled in Miami classes but do not wish to pursue a Miami degree. Non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid.

Oxford Campus
If you already have an undergraduate degree and do not wish to earn a degree at Miami, you may apply to take Miami courses as a non-degree student at www.muohio.edu/apply.

Regional Campuses
If you want to take undergraduate courses without entering a degree program, whether or not you already have a college degree, you may complete up to 12 semester hours at Miami’s Hamilton or Middletown campuses without completing formal admission procedures.

There are a few conditions of admission for non-degree students, including nonattendance at another college or university in the past two years. You must also have not been enrolled as a student at Miami. To apply for non-degree status, please contact the admission office at either Hamilton or Middletown.

Workshop Students

Workshop students are admitted via the workshop registration process. This admission is limited to workshops only.

Transient Students

Transient students are degree students who attend another college or university, have been enrolled during the past 12 months, are in good standing, and have permission from their schools to attend Miami for one semester or summer only. You must apply for transient admission. Also, you must request an official transcript be sent directly from the registrar’s office at your college or university and submit an application fee of $45 (fee is $20 at the
Hamilton and Middletown campuses).

How to Apply — Graduate Study

To receive graduate credit from Miami, you must first be admitted to the Graduate School.

To apply, go to www.muohio.edu/graduate.

For more information, contact the Graduate School at:
The Graduate School, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056
Phone: 513-529-3734, Fax: 513-529-3762, gradschool@muohio.edu

Some departments require admission tests such as the GRE or GMAT. Specific requirements are listed on each department’s website. Or you can write directly to the department in which you plan to study.

For admission as a degree candidate, there is a $35 nonrefundable application fee and you must submit official copies of your transcripts. Please submit your application in a timely manner so processing is completed before classes begin.

Non-Degree Graduate Status

If you do not want to earn a graduate degree at this time but are still interested in taking graduate classes or workshops and earning graduate credit, you can be admitted under continuing non-degree graduate status (CGS).

The minimum requirement is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. You may earn an unlimited number of graduate hours this way, but no more than eight can be counted toward a graduate degree at Miami. The non-refundable application fee is $15.

Some courses and workshops may be open only to students who have earned regular or conditional admission to the program; check with the department about any enrollment restrictions for continuing non-degree status. A student who has been denied regular or conditional admission to a program can enroll in that department’s courses only with department permission. Courses and workshops taken on continuing non-degree status by a student who has been denied regular or conditional admission cannot be applied in the future to a degree program.

Financial Aid

If funds are available, financial aid may be awarded to eligible students for summer sessions. Eligibility is based on the information provided on the student’s 2008-09 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Starting in April, students will be notified of their eligibility for summer aid upon registering for summer classes.

For information on types of aid available, contact your campus financial assistance office.

Course Fees

Click here to download Summer Fees .pdf file

The fees in the .pdf file accessible from the link above are for regular classes, summer 2009. See the Workshop Fees panel below for Workshop fees.

Your fees for each term are based on the per-credit-hour charge for the campus indicated.

There are no maximum rates; students are charged for each hour registered throughout the summer. To avoid a late charge, pay your fees by the first day of the course in which you are enrolling.

You will be billed in April for any summer term courses for which you have registered. You may receive statements on a monthly basis throughout the summer for additional miscellaneous charges and fees and additional fees related to summer registration activity occurring after the initial billing in April.

Please note, however, that it is your responsibility to clear all fees by the first day that a class meets, even if you have not yet been billed for the class. If you have questions about your balance at any time, contact Student
Accounts at 513-529-8744.

A complete description of the qualifications for Ohio residency is available online at www.units.muohio.edu/reg/student/residency, in the Miami University General Bulletin, or from Miami’s residency officer at 513-529-8711.

Workshop Credit and Fees

Many workshops can be taken either for graduate or undergraduate credit. The requirements and fees differ according to which option you choose. Also, fees are assessed based on residency.

Since Miami University is a state-assisted institution, students who are not Ohio residents are assessed an additional charge. Full information about qualifications for Ohio residency is published in the Graduate Bulletin and General Bulletin and is published online at: www.units.muohio.edu/reg/student/residency.

If you are redeeming a fee certificate, it may not cover the entire fee for the workshop. For more information, call the Bursar at 513-529-8700.
