Dr. Nancy Hoffmann, Institute Director, Miami Youth Programs Coordinator

Nancy HoffmannDr. Nancy Hoffmann, Institute Director, began her career as an educator teaching primary and intermediate level students in the Forest Hills School district in Cincinnati, OH. She completed her Masters degree in the Curriculum and Teacher Leadership program at Miami University and once again returned to public schools as a teacher and consultant. After 15 years serving as a public school teacher, Nancy returned to Miami and completed the doctoral program in Educational Leadership with a concentration in curriculum. From 2001-2004, Dr. Hoffmann served as Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and as Visiting Assistant Professor at Miami University during the 2004-2005 academic year. She returned to public schools and accepted a position as the gifted online pre-algebra instructor, coordinator, and consultant for the Horry Co. Schools in Myrtle Beach, SC in 2006. Dr. Nancy Hoffmann is currently serving dual roles at Miami University: 1.) Program Manager for the Lifelong Learning office and 2.) Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Educational Leadership at Miami University.

As Program Manager, she has experience designing and overseeing the curricular, financial, and managerial aspects of new programs and presently manages three (3) distinct non-credit programs including the Institute for Learning in Retirement, Kids in College, and Community Classes. Her primary focus as Program Manager is the development of innovative programmatic opportunities for area youth who are under-represented and come from disadvantaged backgrounds. During her tenure as Program Manager for the Lifelong Learning office, collaborative partnerships with service-oriented groups such as Ambassadors for Children and the Oxford Choice Food Pantry have been developed and sustained. In addition, Dr. Hoffmann is working with local businesses in Oxford to create scholarships for the Kids in College program in the effort to create better access to knowledge for underprivileged youth. As Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Dr. Hoffmann teaches the culminating research coursework for the Curriculum and Teacher Leadership Masters program which focuses on critical action research. Her professional research interests draw upon her background in curriculum design and include developing curriculum for community partnerships, service learning, and collaborative action research. She is a contributing author in Learning to teach: Collaboration, reflection, and inquiry in the student teaching experience (Senge, et. al, Doubleday, 2001) and has presented at numerous local, state, and international conferences.

Ms. Elizabeth Jean Pauna, Gifted Education Expert

Ms. Elizabeth Jean Pauna currently serves as the Coordinator for Gifted Services for Talawanda Schools in Oxford, Ohio. She holds a B.F.A. in art education from the University of Minnesota, coursework completed for a Masters of Science in art education from the University of Wisconsin, and a gifted licensure and Masters degree in Teacher Leadership from Miami University. She has 16 years of teaching experience, and has been coordinating gifted services for six years. In addition to her teaching experience, she has directed several children’s plays and has also worked professionally in summer theatre, serving as a props master.

Mr. Thomas A. Dutton, Faculty

Mr. Thomas A. Dutton is an architect and professor of architecture and interior design at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Architecture in 1975 from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, and his Master of Architecture and Urban Design degree from Washington University in 1977.

Mr. Dutton is also founder and director of Miami University’s Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine (2002), which offers opportunities for faculty, student, and community learning in that inner-city, Cincinnati neighborhood (www.fna.muohio.edu/cce). He has been active in the Over-the-Rhine People’s Movement for twenty-six years. Since 1996, he and his students, through the Over-the-Rhine Design/Build Studio, have designed and rehabilitated housing for low and moderate income people (www.fna.muohio.edu/otr). Fall 2006 was the inaugural semester for the Over-the-Rhine Residency Program, where twelve students from a wide variety of majors lived and worked in the community with institutions that serve the under-served.

His research focuses on the connections between critical pedagogy, architectural education, and urban theory and social practice. He is co-editor (with Lian Hurst Mann) of Reconstructing Architecture: Critical Discourses and Social Practices (University of Minnesota Press, 1996) and editor of Voices in Architectural Education: Cultural Politics and Pedagogy (Bergin and Garvey, 1991). He has published in such journals as the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE), Designer/Builder, Shelterforce, Rethinking Marxism, The Nation, and Z Magazine.

Ms. Sarah Woiteshek, Faculty

Sarah WoiteshekMs. Sarah Woiteshek. Upon completing her undergraduate work at Longwood University (Farmville, VA), Sarah came to Miami University to enroll in the College Student Personnel Master’s program. During her graduate course work, she developed academic interests in the connection between leadership development and community (service) work. For the last two years, she has worked full time for the Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute at Miami, an office committed to developing global citizens through community-based learning initiatives. Specifically, Sarah oversees development and facilitation of the Wilks High School Engagement Program, the Scholar Leader Living Learning Community, an International Service-Learning experience in the Dominican Republic, and supervises a student-led course, EDL 177: Community Engagement in Southwest Ohio through an American Studies thematic sequence. Mr. Steve Elliott, Liaison

Mr. Steve Elliott, Program Director, Mayerson Service-Learning Program, consults with teachers and administrators to help create service programs designed to fit their community and school philosophy. Steve has been a teacher in greater Cincinnati for over 42 years and is widely recognized as a leader in community service and service-learning. Among his many awards for achievement are the Ursuline Teacher of Excellence Award in 2007, the Scholar of Life Award presented by St. Joseph Orphanage in 2001, The Greater Cincinnati race Relations Council Award and the Lighthouse Youth Vision Award for Volunteer Groups. He is the author of Reflections: Students from Finneytown High School Service Program.

Dr. Tom Poetter, Faculty

Photo of Tom PoetterDr. Tom Poetter, Professor, Department of Educational Leadership & Director of the Miami University Partnership Office has over two decades of experience in the field of education including higher education and public schools. Mr. Kevin Talbert, Residence Hall Director

Kevin TalbertMr. Kevin Talbert, M.Ed. Curriculum & Teacher Leadership, is currently a doctoral student in the Department of Educational Leadership at Miami University and served as a Residence Hall Director/Advisor at Miami University for over 300 students during the 2007-08 academic year. In spring 2008, Kevin co-taught EDL 301, a training course for new resident assistants at Miami University. In addition to Mr. Talbert’s knowledge of Miami University as both a student and staff member, Kevin also taught high school social studies at Shawnee High School for eight years, has over ten years experience as a summer camp counselor, and provided leadership for three service learning trips to Chicago, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania.

Dr. Raymond Terrell, Liaison

Dr. Raymond TerrellDr. Raymond Terrell is the Assistant Dean for Research & Diversity at Miami University. Prior to his service as Assistant Dean, Dr. Terrell held the position of Distinguished Professional in Residence in the Department of Educational Leadership at Miami University from 1998-2003. Ray has over 40 years experience in the field of education and has served as an English teacher, principal, superintendent, dean, and professor. His publications include: Culturally Proficient Leadership: The Personal Journey Begins Within; Cultural Proficiency: Tools for Secondary School Administrators; Cultural Proficiency: A Manual for School Leaders. 2nd edition; Culturally Proficient Instruction: A Book for People Who Teach; Cultural Proficiency: A Manual for School Leaders; and Making Students Feel Like Family: How Teachers Create Warm and Caring Classroom Climates.

Dr. Donna McCollum, Faculty

Photo of Donna McCollumDr. Donna McCollum is currently serving as Interim Deputy Director for Research at Miami University. She earned her Ph.D. in zoology from Miami University in 2004, has eleven years teaching experience in public schools, and has been teaching at Miami University for the past three years in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies. Her area of expertise is stream ecology and is a leading contributor to a variety of field research projects, particularly in the area of restoration of watersheds and wetlands. She currently teaches courses on Environmental Measurement, Environmental Topics, and assists with the Public Service Projects.

Ms. Kimberly Snow Logsdon, Information Design and Promotions Manager

Kim LogsdonMs.Kimberly Logsdon is the Information Design and Promotions Manager for Lifelong Learning. Having been in the graphic/information design field for more than 20 years, she brings extensive experience to the program. Her education includes Graphic Design Technology, Web Design and Programming, as well as Business Administration. She has received multiple awards for her work including the prestigious Matrix Award from the Association for Women in Communication.

Ms. Donna Gouvan, Lead Program Associate for Summer Honors Institute

Donna GovanMs. Gouvan has ten years of service with Lifelong Learning at Miami University. As program associate, Donna assists in all office functions, with her expertise being in the support of the non‐credit/community programs. Donna implemented and maintains Lumens, which is the non‐credit/community program registration software. She also works closely with the Institute for Learning in Retirement Program (ILR). Donna prides herself by offering exceptional customer service, which is sure to show through any interaction one has with her.

Ms. Lorene Moore, Program Associate

Lorene MooreMs. Lorene Moore is a program associate with Lifelong Learning. With 19 years of service, she offers extensive knowledge in all areas. Her main responsibility is handling credit workshop documents. She processes proposals, budget revisions and final financial reports, checking for completeness and accuracy. Lorene is the first contact in communication between Lifelong Learning and credit workshop directors.

Ms. Debbie Davidson, Program Associate

Debbie DavidsonMs. Debbie Davidson is Lifelong Learning’s Credit Workshop registration specialist. She brings 15 years of experience from the Office of the Registrar, Records and Registration to our team. Her expertise includes building the workshop courses in Banner, admitting/readmitting students if required, through the actual registration. She has also worked in the Theatre Dept. and Accounts Payable at Miami University, as well as the Miami University Credit Union.
