Making Pots on the Pottery Wheel

Thurs. | Sept. 25 - Nov. 13 | 6:30 - 8:30 PM | $119 plus $10 clay fee due 1st class
Join local potter J. Harris and learn about making pots on the pottery wheel. Novice potters will learn throwing from the ground up. In this 8 week class, you’ll complete several projects to take home and enjoy! People with all levels of experience are welcome. Come join the fun!

 

Making Tiles

Mon. | Sept. 22 – Nov. 10 | 6:30 - 8:30 PM | $119 plus $10 clay fee due 1st class
What a fun class! No experience, skills, or aptitude needed! In this class, you’ll be playing with pattern and texture to create more than one trivet (but less than enough tiles to cover your kitchen).

Instructor: J. Harris, area resident for 40 years and former teacher, has been a full-time potter for 15 years.

Basic Skills for Jewelry Fabrication in Metal

Wed. | Oct. 1 - Nov. 12 | No Class Oct. 29 | 6 - 8 PM | $190 includes supply fee
Design and make jewelry from copper, brass, and sterling silver. Learn to saw, drill, pierce, texture, form, rivet, and silver solder. Tips for developing a design portfolio. In the six class sessions we will make French hook earrings, a band ring, and a brooch/pendant using your designs.

Instructor: Jan Krenke Southern, Silversmith and Art Jeweler, taught Jewelry/Metals at Bowling Green State University prior to moving to Oxford in 2003.

Handmade Chains

Mon. | Sept. 8 - Oct. 27 | 6:30 - 8:30 PM | $200 plus supply fee
This course will explore a variety of handmade chains, including cable, Byzantine, and Roman links. Students will create two to three finished chains in sterling and fine silver. Supply fees determined first night of class; (estimated $50 – 125 per chain).

Instructor: Lucille Hautau, Master Jeweler, has an M.A. in Metals, 25 years of teaching experience, and was awarded “Best of Show” at the 4th Annual Pyramid Hill Art Fair.

Chi Kung

Mon. | Sept. 8 – Nov. 10 | 6:30 – 8 PM | $125
Chinese Chi Kung is becoming more and more popular in the US because of its traditional emphasis on animal movements, breathing techniques, holistic approach, and relatively low impact exercises. Learn several breathing techniques, I Chin Ching (change of muscle and tendon classic) exercises, as well as some of the Five Animal Frolics of Hua To.

 

Tai Chi

Wed. | Sept. 10 - Nov. 12 | 6:30 - 8:00 PM | $125
Tai Chi is a gentle exercise suitable for people of any health level. It involves purposeful breathing and movements designed to increase the body’s flexibility and range of motion. This class will encompass the “Simplified 24 Posture” or Peking Style form which is the most well known version, as well as applications for self-defense.

Instructor: Dennis Cook is a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shaolin-Do Kung Fu. He has been a student of the art for 28+ years and a teacher for 25 years.

 

Swing and Waltz Ballroom Dance

Thurs. | Sept. 18 - Nov. 6 | No Class Oct. 16 | 7:40-8:30 PM | $95 per person
First class is FREE and open to the public!
Learn classic ballroom dances including the swing and waltz in this beginning class. Bring a partner or come alone and enjoy the magic of ballroom dancing! Classes will be held in the spacious and historic ballroom of the Oxford Community Arts Center.

Instructor: Michael Scoggins has over 20 years experience in the dance industry and has choreographed, directed, and performed at venues around the world.

Miami University’s Lifelong Learning office offers instructor-facilitated online courses in partnership with ed2go™. The courses are informative, fun, convenient, and highly interactive.

At the end of each course, we can provide you with a completion letter, provided that you passed the final exam on your first attempt. You can show this letter to an existing or potential employer as evidence of having completed all course requirements.

All courses run for six weeks (with a two week grace period at the end.) Courses are project-oriented and include lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas supplementary links, and more.
